Girl Dead er Gang Battle; 17 Girls Held NEW YORK I - A lJ-year-old girl stabbed a 14-year-old girl to death in a Brooklyn subway ila tion Tuesday night In the climax of a series of brawls involving a core of girls from 12 to 17. Kvelyn Orr, of 192 Sands Street, rot far from the navy yard, died after a number of knife wounds one in the heart. Seventeen girls were arrested. Most of them, including the slay er, were charged only with juven ile delinquency. Names of the children, all Ne groes, were not made public be cause of their ages. Some of the battling children are members of the Diplomats girl gang,- and some are members of the rival Chaplains gang, while others are not known to have any gang affilintion. Tolice said petty childish dick ering rather than gang rivalry apparently led to the violence. Once things got hot, however, the rival gang members stuck with their own affiliates. Story Evolves j After long questioning of those arrested, a detective pieced to gether this version of the battles: The argument started on a street near the Farragut housing project, in which the slain girl lived. Basis for the flareup of bad blood was vague, but there ere reports of "name calling." The Diplomats come from the vicinity of the housing project, while the rival Chaplains come from the Bedford Stuyvesant sec tion some distance away, but grilling of the children indicated that rivalry between the two gangs was not the primary cause of the bitterness. Brawl Continue . j From the housing project the sporadic brawling continued along the streets to the High Street sta-; (ion of Hie Kighth Avenue-lnd sub way line, on the boundary be tween' the Brooklyn Heights hotel apartment neighborhood and a slum-factory area. Some of the combatants drifted down onto the subway platform, and the Orr girl was stabbed near a change booth. She staggered through a corridor almost a block long, and made her way up to the street where she collapsed. She was dead upon arrival at Cumber land Hospital. The other girls scattered, but most of them were rounded up by police in a short time. On the subway platform police found two knives both long bladrd instruments of the kind used by butchers for boning meat. Col. Ebbs Named To Engineer Post PORTLAND UP Appointment of Col. Richard F. F.bbs was executive officer nf the Manhattan district at Han ford, Wash., during World War II, and directed acquisition of land for that super-secret military project.
