The home, built almost entirely by volunteer labor, was started last fall. Recalls First Presbyterian Church School An alert little woman who re members every Important date in the lives of her son, four grand' children ind six great grandchil dren, as well as her own, celebrates her 99th birthday Sundiy with a small family party at Gilmour Nursing Home. One of the dates Mrs. Hadaisah Smith remembers is the day in 1869 when, at the age of 12, she became a charter member of First Presbyterian Church Sunday school in Salem, She is believed to be the only member of that group Kill living. The lives of Mn. Smith and her family hive been close to the church since its founding. Her parents, Samuel and Margaret Wilson, were charter members of the church. Her son, Carl Smith, was clerk of session almost 26 years snd itill serves as an elder. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren have all been mem bers of the church, although sev eral of them have moved away now. Mrs. Smith lived in Salem only a few monthi the year First Presby terian Church was organized. She and her parents moved back to Brownsville, Mrs. Smith s birth place, where Wilson was a master weaver in Brownsville Woolen Mill. But she hat been a Salem resi dent continuously since her mar riase to Hamlin Smith in Salem in 1892, except for l'i years in Vancouver, Wash., and Portland in 1907-09. She resided at 749 Liberty St., from 1909 until moving to the rest home In 1952. Now suffering from arthritis, with light and bearing dimming, Mn. Smith'i favorite pastimes are recalling the events and dates ef her lifetime snd those of her loved ones, and reading in a Bible with large black type. Until recent years, she spent a large part of her time knitting and crocheting and was known for the beautiful ifghani she made for relatives ind friends. Technically the offense is termed dumping garbage along a public highway. After contacting livestock theft Investigators of the State Agricul ture Department, however, it was revealed that three-year-old bull had been reported stolen earlier this week from Lindsey Ward, In dependence Route 1. Although the theft and remains were not definitely linked Friday, there was a atrong Indication that the "garbage" formerly belonged to Ward, Young said. Auto Fires Extinguished Two minor car fires, both on North Liberty Street, was reported to Salem firemen Friday after noon. Both blazes were extinguished prior to the arrival of city equip ment. A car belonging to Kenneth Potts, 2890 S. 12th St.,- received about $20 damage in a fire about 2:10 pm. in the 2oo block of North Liberty Street, fireman laid. Reported cause of the firs was an electrical short. The second fire, reported about 4: IS p.m., caused an estimated $25 damage to a car owned by Morris Yiw, SM Hood St., the department reported. A leaky carburetor wai blamed for the blaze.
