A COUNTRY HOtSE including
1 the latest ideal (or carefree family
t living in locationi where desirable
' land it not scarce is featured in
' Design ' HW-I for- The House of
The Week.
; This is a beautiful home a
! rambling one-story with an ex
1 pansion attic - for a fourth bed-
room and third bathroom. Iff
kitchen, laundry, Dutch kitchen,
activities room and covered garden
terrace give the family a big
aeparate apartment for informal
life in all seasons. Fireplaces are
located both in the Dutch kitchen
and activities room.
This planning reserves the liv
ing room for more formal use
something that mothers ask - for.
The living room and dining room
are removed'from the rest of the
house.
This Is a good sized house,
too. It covers 2.146 square foot
without its two-car garase. It is
more than It7 foot wide, including
garage. And with the garage en-J
tcred at one end, this house de
serves a corner plot or acreage
with enough elbow room to provide
for turning and hacking.
ARCHITECT Herman H. York,
specialist in the design of dis
tinctive home throughout the roll
ing woodland of Long Island's
north shore, planned HW-8 to meet
the demand for flow homes for the
business man, professional man, or
junior executive.
.The plan Is gracious, without
being ostentatious. The main en
trance 'is under a covered stoop
and leads into a generous sized
foyer. At one side a partly open
stairway leads upstairs. It's some
thing you'd, expect- in a foyer,
whether you finish the upstairs
or not.
Opposite the stairway is an In
door planting box giving a grace
ful touch to the living room
entrance. A picture window over
looking an open garden terrace is
straight ahead of you when . youJ
stand in the foyer.
Around the corner from the
front door is a coat closet. On
the other side of the foyer Is the
kitchen. This Is a real stcpsaving
feature of the plan. The house
wife in the kitchen has a view of
the front walk and is only a few
steps from the front door.

and am wondering why we have
never seen any cacti at any shows

we have lots of flowers at shows
that are only grown indoors. Why
can't we ever have cacti? I know
I'm not alone about admiring

back its natural clean look. Is
there anything I can use? R. S.

the dirt. Remove sll old wax, and
apply a penetrating seal, the

LEBANON1 Things particular,
ly leaves and seeds are brewing
over at Lebanon now, as the wom
en of the town arc getting ready
for their annual tyerb. Tea one of
the really outstanding garden
events, in the Willamette Valley.
The date has been set for July
26. from 2 to :30 p.m. It will be
held again this year at the home
of Mrs. Earl Michelson, 31 Park
St.
. This Is the lth of the teas and
plans are to give an idea pt an
old apothecary shop in on corner
of the garden, with display of
beverage herbs and two displays
of Biblical herb Information.
Herb flower - arrangements will
be made and displayed by Mrs.
Bruce Ensley. Pot pourri jars,
made and filled by Mrs. Peter F.
Smith, will also be displayed.
Along with the latter will be herb
books and scrapbonks from Mrs.
Smith's extensive 'library on the
subject, tyrs. Smith is the general
chairman for the tea, aad Mrs.
Frank Groves win assist with the
apothecary display.
Herb Lert Exhibited
Horticultural herb displayed and
folk lore herb displays are also
being planned. An exhibit of charts
showing herb uses-will beTon hand.
Frequently, I receive calls con-
cerning the Herb Tea, and all I
can say is that unless you've been
there you just wouldn't under
stand. It's far better than one can
describe and also it is far differ
ent from anything else I attend
on either garden or farm assign
ments.
Frequently, too, I'm asked for a
list of herbs just like that, I'm
expected to be able to sit down
and tick them off just as one
would the states of the nation.
"No two herb students will make
identical herb lists, and ve,7
herb student will make a different
list tomorrow than he made to
day," Doris Gunderson, Lebanon
herb fancier, will tell you If you
ask her for a list.
