ROCHESTER. N. Y. (AP)
There ar lot of children
whoe devotion to dumb animals
is intense. But not too many are
willing to give up Minw of their
summer vacation time to demon
strate that devotion.
At the Humane Society'i Ro
chester headquarters, a group of
youngsters make a habit of doing
just that.
Take 11-year-old Susan Flieg,
for example. With her 13 vear
old sister. Beth, Susie is driven
to the Humane Society early Sat
urday mornings by her mother.
The youngsters usually are
dressed in sturdy dungarees, jac
kets and old shoes, for the work
they do is not daintv and they
are In and out of doors manv
times, regardless of the weather.
Kerriie Aihnals
The day may begin by taking
some dogsjor a run, and walk
ing some others for exercise.
After that cages have to be
scraped and cleaned, water and
fund containers scoured, and spe
cial food prepared for animals
on a special diet. For instance,
Mary Ann. an orphaned babv
tamh. has to be bottle fed with
her particular milk formula.
These duties and many other
menial chores, are performed un
der the direction of regular Hu
mane Society employes.
Susie Fleig first became inter
ested in this kind of work when
she visited the Humane Society
shelter here with her Girl Scout
troop When she went home, in
trigued with what she had heard,
she asked her mother if she
thought the shelter's director, C.
Raymond Naramore. "would let
me work there Saturdays for
nothing."
Offer Aoeptetf
Her mother suggested that
Susie put the idea to Naramore
in a letter. She did and it wasn't
long before the director was on
the phone accepting the offer.
That's when sister Beth decided
she'd like, to get in on the pro
ject too.
Other children also have asked
to he included in the program
after viewing some of the live
animal shows Naramore conducts
at city and countv schools in thi
area lie answers every request
for these unpaid jobs with an in
vitation to visit his "zoo", ant)
keeps a card file of all these
energetic animal lovers. Sizeable
number of them are interested in
becoming veterinarians, he says
Currycombing a burro or try
ing to teach Blackle the crow a
new trick Is Just frosting on the
cake for these boys and girls.
Encoa rages YmIsi
Naramore encourages them to
aid him in his training and tam
ing program with the animals he
uses in his shows.
This makes it a three-way pro
position for the children, who
range in age from 10 to 15. They
have the satisfaction that comes
with doing worthwhile work,
they learn patience and they
have a lot of fun.
Actually, it's only possible for
ahout 2S youngsters to work at
the shelter at a time and rhey are
selected from a list that now
numbers more than 500 appli
cants. So. it's almost a certainty that
Rochester's Humane Society will
never run short of volunteer
help.
