    Official 'Brass' Helps Launch First
Production of Salem Tin Can Firm
House Group 'Divided Over Civil Rights
Can line foreman Richard Wie
land had plenty of help Wednesday
as the big machines on his No. 1
production line noisily punched out
the first batcW cans made in the
new Salem plant of American Can
Co.
The cans were of high grade
tinplate metal; the first-day cere
monial helo was hich aradc
"brass" Gov. Elmo Smith and
nther mvernment and industry
leaders who switched on the plant'
initial production and who in
spected" the fhSt run of cans, j
Putting the first of three produc
tion lines into action called for
the ceremony of the day at the
nearly -completed million dollar in
dustrial plant in North Salem near
the Cascade Meats plant.
Experirarrd Nucleus
A nucleus of IS experienced
Canco men transferred from other
plants started the Salem work
Wednesday. Plant Superintendent
.1. ; Griffin said hirine of em
ployes locally would begin next
week.
Bv August the plant is to be in
full production with a crew of 75
and an output of 240 million cans a
year. Then an Open House for the
public will be planned.
American Can officials and a
Salem Chamber of Commerce dele-
sation exchanged shouted greet
ings as 450 cans per minute formed
on the Drodurtion line, banced UD
and down and around on the con
veyor belt through the series of
heating, welding, punching and
other operations, then headed
across the big, open manufacturing
room ceiling, through can-size
openings in the concrete wall to
the storage area, then back with
out stopping1 through the wall and
down to the hands of men packing
them in large, square heavy-paper I
sacks lor storage and shipment.
Machine Fed
Theirs were the first hands to
touch the cans since a workman
fed stocks of tinplate pieces into
the machinery in the first place.
Since only one of three lines
was complete and working and
since nothing had yet been stored
in the 240 by 380 foot warehouse,
the cans "rattled around" the
plant in more ways han one
Wednesday,
American Can Vice President R.
C. Stolk said the warehouse offers
a feature new to American Can in
its heiehth 29 feet, which per
mits can stacks half again as high j
as in most Canco plants.
Open Factory
Another new feature in the com
pany's newest plant, he said, is
the entirely-open factory section
non partitioning of maintenance,
supply or other production depart
ments. The manufacturing room is
161 by 200 feet.
Among those visiting dignitaries
who saw the first can -run, besides
Gov. Smith, .ere Salem Mayor
Robert F. JQlite, Chamber Vice
President CUude A. Miller and N.
W. MerriJJfSalem packer who is
president of Northwest Canners
and Freezers Association.
Can company leaders present in
eluded, besides West Coast vice
president Stolk, E. G. Gross of
Portland, assistant Pacific sales
manager, and R. K. Frederick,
Portland plant manager.
In the Salem plant, headed by
Griffin, the top men include Wei
land as can line foreman, Robert
Morlev as warehouse foreman and
Peter Pernosky as mechanical
supervisor.
