Most, injuries were minor. The public meeting was held at Chewpatty, Sands, a seafront area. Nehru reaffirmed that Bombay would become a federally admin istered area going to neither of two major rival language groups, the Marathi and Gujerati. He said that Bombay, by its violence and lack of public order, had forfeited its immediate right to self-determination. This, he added, might be five years away. Demonstrators by the thousands converged oo Chowpatty Sands where Nehru was addressing the public meeting after the end of a two-day session of a committee from the AJl-India Congress, Nehru's political party. Surge Hiked The authorities succeeded in halting the initial surge of agi tators less than an eighth of a mile from the temporary speak big stand erected for Nehru. Saturday night police arrested more than 1,009 demonstrators who marched on a meeting of Nehru'i dominant Congress party. Bombay is a city of three mil lion. Hearings on Sarena Claims iCalled Biased WASHINGTON I - "A biased, prejudiced hearing from the start" was the way Rep. Hoffman (R-Mich) described Saturday a congressional investigation of the Al Sarena mining controversy of Oregon. . ' Hoffman, a member of the House-Senate subcommittee which investigated the '5 mining patents granted to the firm, said the Democratic majority used "fed eral tax dollars to create political propaganda." ' The subcommittee is preparing to release its findings and a ma jority report being circulated asks Atty. Gen. Brownell to cancel me patents issued in 1954 to Al Sarena Mines, Inc , on 475 acres In Oregon's Rogue River National Forest. The report contends that the Al . Sarena firm had a greater interest In getting title to timber on the - land than to the minerals. . The report will not be released until after preparation of a minor- j Ity version, which Hoffman indi cated would repeat Republican; contentions that the investigation was politically inspired. t Hoffman said of the Investiga-! tion "it was the dirtiest, nastiest deal I ever was involved in." He also indicated he would challenge the subcommittee's authority to Inquire I"10 matter. The subcornmlttee, he said, was created to look Into timber prob lems such as marketing.
