up to. But he said if it turns out
they really are reducing their

uniform caps for the Air Force col
lected kickbacks totaling $27,745
from her and told her he planned
to give the money "under the
table" to government personnel.
The testimony was given by Miss
.lane Mackey of Montclair, fi. J .

City. She said one upshot of the
rieal was that her firm went bank
rupt. Miss Mackey appeared before
the Senate Investigations Subcom
mittee in its search for any crook
edness in the handling of military
clothing contracts.
"Short f Cash"
She named Sol Schlesinger, own
er of the Ideal Uniform Cap Co ,
in Freeport, N Y., as the man who,
she said, told her in 1951 to ad
vance the $27,745 because "he was
short of ready rash to pay under
the table payments to insure the
continuity of the contracts."
Miss Mackey explained that
Schlesinger had a contract to fur
nish the Army Quartermaster Corp
with a large number of Air Force
caps and she had a subcontract to
supply 700.000 leather visors and
chin straps.

wrong, the President said, and in
any case tax cuts should wait until
a start has been made on reducing
the national debt.
