Advisory Committee for Aeronau
tics (NACA) Tuesday unveiled a
new 33 million dollar supersonic
wind tunnel the nation's largest
for research on airplane engines
ot the future.
The tunnel will duplicate, (or
engines and engine parts as large
as five feet la diameter, air speeds
from two to 31 times that of
sound 1,200 to 1.800 miles an hour
at altitude up to 30 miles.
Few current jet aircraft operate
above altitudes of about 10 miles,
except for brief intervals. The
NACA, as the top government
asency for research on aircraft
and engines, keeps its eyes, how
ever, on requirements for the
years ahead rather than on cur
rent air operations.

The new wind tunnel, 10 feet by
10 feet, is a part of the NACA's
Lewis Flight Propulsion Labora
tory at Cleveland Airport.
The new facility is called the
Lewis unitary plan supersonic
wind tunnel.
The unitary plan refers to co
operative use with industry and
the armed forces.
Most Powerful
NACA told visitors at the first
public inspection of the new fa
eility that the tunnel's 250.000
horsepower electric-motor drive is
the most powerful of its kind in
the world.
It produces the air speed of up
to 3'j times the sped of sound,
and unprecedented velocity for
tunnels that large.
Dr. Edward R. Sharp, director
of the laboratory, said the new
tunnel is valuable particularly for
work on problems of turbo-jets and
ram-jet engines. He said engines
and parts as large as five feet in
diameter may be studied in the 10
foot square test section.
An even larger super-sonic wind
tunnel is under construction at the
Air Force Arnold Engineering De
velopment Center at Tulahoma,
Tenn , but it will not be com
pleted for year or more.
The facility here went into ope
ration recently after a "shake
down" of several months.
