Hiding Said
Big Problem
The tendency of people to cover
up and hide mental illness is one
of the biggest roadblocks to edu
cating the community on bow to
meet the problem, Dr. Henry C.
Schumacher, West Coast con
sultant on mental health with the
V. S. Public Health Service, told
a group in Salem Tuesday.
He addressed a breakfast meet
ing of the Marion County Mental
Health Advisory Committee at the
Marion Hotel.
'Teople are willing to admit
physical illness it gains them
sympathy," Dr. Schumacher said.
"However, many people try lo
avoid admitting mental illness be
cause they don't want other peo
ple to think they can't run their
own lives."
As important as the treatment
itself. Dr. Schumacher stressed,
is the spreading of the word to the
community as to why people have
emotional troubles.
He suggested that getting per
sons personally involved in work
ing on mental health problems
offers the best form of education.

Job Openings

Both job openings and place-
ments increased rapidly during
recent weeks and exceeded simi-

since 1953, the State Unemploy
ment Compensation Commission
reported Tuesday.'
Unfilled openings were coun
ted at 1,558 early this month and
others were being added almost
daily, officials said. Non-farm
placements for April reached
6,452.
Logging and lumbering jobs
opened up rapidly in April and
lumped from 67 to 182 A year
before only 46 were listed in this

Sherman has the distinction nf
being the first of Oregon's 36
counties to report its returns of
last Friday's primary election in
the state elections bureau here.
The state elections bureau im
mediately started the state canvass
of returns which probably will re
quire a month to complete, officials
said. The stale canvass is based
on county totals as canvassed by
county canvassing boards.
Records show that Sherman
usually is one of the first two or
three counties to report election
returns to the state elections bur
