Candidates are few on tha non partisan city ballot which reaches Salem voters la conjunctlor with the statewide primary election vot ing, between I am. and I p.m. (Precinct potling places listed on page se, sec. . , Contests exist in two wards over the election of an alderman for a City Council seat. In downtown Ward 1 incumbent Clayton Jones is opposed by Pat Roden and Dr. A. D. Woodmansee Three Candidates In North Salem's Ward S three men are making a bid for the council post from which David O'Hara is retirini after 27 years service. The candidates are Earl O. Bushnell, Walter R. Heine and Kenneth w. Hutchins. Unopposed on the city ballot are Mayor Robert F. White, City Judge Douglas Hay and City Treasurer Howard Brandvold, all seeking re election. Three present aldermen seeking reelection in their wards without opposition are James Nich olson. Ward 1; Russell Ronesteele, Ward 7, and Loring Grier. Ward I Three of the city ballot measures propose charter changes that are classified by city officials as mostly corrective" in nature. Notice by Mall O'e would require notice by mail instead of posted notices to direct a property owner to have a sidewalk built along his property. Another would allow the employ' ment of police department men without the present requirement that they must have lived one year in Salem. Another measure would liberalize some of the benefits under the Salem firemen's pension system. The bond issues proposed are: Parks development and purchase of new city park sites. $700,000. New Waterllne Water supply increase by placing new waterline from North Santiam River to Salem, $3,750,000, to be paid off from water revenues. Widening of 12th Street south of Mission: Fairgrounds Road he tween South and Hood: Market Street east of Summer, $188,000. Replace four old wood bridges with concrete structure i40,ooo Fire alarm system, $65,000. These are the proposed special taxes: To pay salaries of eight ad ditional firemen. $37,000 a year To add maintenance funds for city parks, $35,000 a year. To improve Salem airport, $50 ooo for one vear only. To improve Salem public library and create West Salem Drancn "' $30,000 for one year only. Allen McRae Resigns City Police Post Allen McRae, Salem police de tective, has submitted his resig nation in order to accept a posi tion with a national insurance company, Chief of Police Clyde A Warren announced Thursday, The resignation Will be effec tive June 14, Warren said. No replacement has been designated yet, the police chief said. McRae is the second detective to resign within a month. David Houser also resigned recently to take a job with the same Insur ance company which hired Mc Rae. McRae joined the Salem police force in November, IMS. He was made a detective in June, 1949. He has been a resident of Salem for the past 31 years. McRae said Thursday that reasons or making the job change included salary, better promotion opportunities, and special company benefits. Mc Rae, his wife Margaret and their son Jeff, 4, will move to Eugene where he will be stationed. Engineers to Gather Here Several score members of the mid-Willamette Valley section. Professional Engineers of Oregon, will attend a dinner meeting at the Senator Hotel at 6:30 p.m. to day, with G. H. i Hank Bauer of General Electric as the principal speaker. Bauer has been senior design engineer In the civil and stnietural design group of General Electric at the Hanford atomic works, Richland, Wash., since Auqust, 1947. He was previously with th Bureau of Reclamation at Denver, and is s licensed pilot.
