Statesman, Salem, Ore., FH. May 18, '56-(Sec.III)-23 - Canned Meat Handy During Sumhnertime Handy canned meat have come to the rescue of many an un planned get-together for teenagers or grownups. For such unplanned affairs and for family meals, It's wise to keep plentiful supply of time and party saving canned mpatn within flneertlo reach. . Take a good look at any canned meat shelf and you are sure to find a variety of economical, easy-to-aerve canned meats for both parly j and family service. When stocking ! your cupboard with these handy meats, be cure to choose from the many quality branded items. Can ned meals which boast a well known quality seal have complete heating and serving directions on; every can. I Hamburgers, 'one of the mostj popular of the caned meats, are a particular favorite of the young er set. For a teenage record party or after-the-movie affair, platter of piping hot hamburgers served in toasted or oven-warmed hamburg er buns with soft drinks are re freshment aplenty. To serve canned hamburgers, Just heat them in their own gravy and serve with any of the tradi tional accompaniments such as catsup, chili sauce or barbecue sauce. Or, for a super deluxe hamburger-cheese combination, heat the canned hamburgers in a flavor ful tomato cheese sauce before serving. Here's an easy recipe that's bound to intrigue the recoid set. Hamburgers With Tomato Cheese Sauce 1 can hamburKers l'i teaspoons cornstarch 1 cup tomato juice Vi cup processed cheese food i teaspoon Worcestershire sauce tt cup chopped green pepper Mix together cornstarch and enough tomato juice to make a smooth paste. Add remaining to mato juice, cheese, Worcestershire sauce and green pepper. Cook, stirring constantly over low heat . until thick. Stir in gravy from can of hamburgers. Place hamburgers on top of sauce, cover and cenk about 10 minutes or until ham burgers are heated. Makes 3 or 4 servings. SURPRISE COMPANY SPECIAL 1 can hamburgers 2 tall cans baked beans V cup catsup 1 teaspoon prepared mustard Empty 2 cans baked beans into 2 quart baking platter or flat cas serole. Cover with canned ham burgers. Combine catsup and mustard. Pour over the meat. Bake in a moderate oven (375 degree) 30 minutes.' Serve hot to 6 persons. Basic Dressing Can Be Varied Having a jar of good French dressing on hand is a must for the housewife these days when salads might be anything from fresh fruits to tossed greens. Here is one for a starter, add garlic celery seed, mustard, chopped onion and cu cumber, various spices and herbs or a bit of honey for the occasion as it arises. BASIC FRENCH DRESSING 1 cup oil , . Va to i cupvvirfegar . , 1 to 3 tablespoons-sugar 14 teaspoons salt 4 teaspoon paprika 4 teaspoon dry mustard 1 clove garlic Measure all ingredients into a bottle or jar. Cover tightly and shake well. Chill several hours, then remove garlic.
