The authority for county zoning and planning comes from the stat legislature which passed an enabling act under which counties could act. Wo second th recom mendation of the Statesman and urge Marion County voter to follow through, because sound planning in Marion County will benefit the entire state. Here in lane County we have had the longest experience of any area in the state with zoning and planning on a county wide basis. It was approved by lane County voters in the general election of 1948 by a fairly narrow margin. Most of the votes' against the proposition were from the rural areas of tho county where people feared, unnecessarily, that it would affect farm and timber lands. As th Statesman points out, this is not true. It has principally to do with fringe areas around cities. Most of th problems are with sub-division and highway devel opment. In Lane County the planning com mission is composed of a group of dis tinguished citizens appointed by th Coun ty Board of Commissioners. It takes its work seriously and has done an excellent job, We are sure that there are few peoplo in Lane County who would question the benefits of county planning and zoning, If Marion County voters approve the zon ing proposal, they will find it to b one of the best investments in good government that they ever mad.
