Pays Final Tribute to Sen.

tion's capital laid farewell to "the
Veep" in a moving funeral cere
mony Wednesday that left po
litical partisanship wilted and for
gotten. President Eisenhower, Vice
President Nixon and other 'top 'fi
gures from both parties joined in
the solemn tribute to Alben W.
Barklcy senator, former vice
president and by common agree
ment one of the most genial men
ever to walk the American po
litical stfige.

in Foundry Methodist Church, the
body of the 79-year-old Demov.

cial train for burial at Paducah,
Ky., where another service will
be held Thursday.
Eisenhower postponed a news
conference uniil Friday in order
to attend Wednesday's ceremony.

ored by his countrymen, but who
ever put principle above pedestal;
who was a partisan with deep con
victions and yet without a btind
spot that cannot see the integrity
of an opponent's position."

wishes, but he'll have to mix his
drinks at home.
Six trustees of School Dist. SO
voted unanimously Tuesday night
to offer Colton a 1956-57 contract
under a resolution which forbids
employment in any phase of the
liquor industry.
Colton. a science teacher here for
three years, has tended bar nights
for two vears at a hotel cocktail
lounge. Friends say he wanted to
supplement his teaching salary, es
timated at (4,300 a year.
The school board came under,
heavy fire from teachers, students
and parents after three of its mem-1
hers voted April 10 not to nllrr.

began a resignation-a-day cam
paign in protest
Five teachers have submitted
resignations.. But Mrs Jeanne Mc
Govern. vice president of the
school board, said she would ask
Supt. Charles Davis to allow them
to withdraw the resignations in
view of last night's board action
Colton. a war veteran and father
of two. was not available (or com
ment. He had said earlier he would
quit bartending if it meant a choice
between that and leaching.
A new contract would mark the
end of his three year probationary
period in local schools and qualify
him for "tenure " This means a
salary increment and virtually as
sured permanent employment as a
teacher.
Davis and A. B Chasteen. a
board member, dratted this reso
lution: "Be it resolved . .that no cm
ploye shall in any way become or
remain engaged in any occupation
or employment in which the princi
pal duties involve handling the
sale, manufacture or dispensing of
intoxicating liquors while engaged
in the district's employe ."
The resolution and a proposal to
offer Colton a contract passed with
quietly unanimous chorus of
"Ayes." About 50 persons attended'
the meeting.
