Small Children's Fears
May Bo Caused by Parents
By babiara rc.in.ri
((y EstaaaWa Arat
A rhUd of thrrt and four years af aft Is usually afraid of all kinds
of thingl. What ara tha kinds of fear situations that lilila children moat
often encounter? Tbest experiences may. If Improperly handled, lead
to habitual helplessness la tha (act af danger. Ignorance of tht mean
Inf of sUrtllna things caa product fear la a chuo a loud notst, a fall,
a dog 1 barking.
Fear of dogs, common In young
children. It not Inborn but it tht
result of sudden jumps and hounds,
and barking. When a child learns
that other children !tl friendly to
ward dogs, or wbea they have a
smart, harmless' p v p p 7 in the
home, tha fear will be overcome.
Stories FrlikWa
Another reason child is fear
ful la that ha .worries about what
might happen to himself. If 70a
U-U him a scary story about a
monster with two, heads, who eats
little boys, ha may be very much
concerned about whether or not
the monster will tat him. '
He knows what happens to
things that are eaten, but be does
not realiie that there really aren t
such things as monsters. Since be
doesn't know. It's only natural that
he thinks a monster may be under
his bed at night If be wants the
light left on, it's all right, he can
then see that there la nothing to
be strata of.
Children may aim have fear
caused by adults. If a child'a mo
ther is afraid of thunderstorms,
the children almost always will be
afraid toe. Their attitude might
be, "If this big person who I de
pend upon for safety It afraid,
there surely must be something to
fear."
Fear af deep water, of going
places alone, of meeting new peo
ple; fear of pain, or darkness, of
insects, are some kinds of fears
that parents may impart to their
children. If a parent realizes his
own fear and overcome it, the
child caa be saved from- having
these unnecessary, fears.
Uatea ta 1
What parents talk about often
frightens children. Discussions of
dentists and doctors as people to
be a veld td, war talk that is
gloomy, talk about family troubles
all these disturb a child.
Hardest of all to do away with
and most damaging to child's per
sonality is that uneasy fear which
comes from vaguely sensing a sit
uation that he does not understand.
If there la tension and bickering
between tha two people who mean
the most to him, the child will
inevitably suffer.
Parents ara sometimes the cause
of tear that would be tha last to
bring about it they were conscious
of what they were doing. This is
a tear caused by their ambition for
their child to shine. It is very hard
