HOLLYWOOD STARR RE
PORT: Most people don't realize
there is such an organization is
the Screen Extras Guild, but there
is. In fact, they
just might go on
strike in another "
two months
against both
movie and TV
film producers,
their chief com
plaint being that
too many pro
ducers are
shooting too many films out of the
country, thus depriving the extras
of work.
SEG members have been called
the backbone -of the industry,1
and there is some truth in it. A
producer could hardly get along
without them. They are the people
you see walking down the streets

while the star stands on a corner
smoking a cigarette. They are the
people who fill the tables in a
restaurant scone, sit in the bleach
ers in a baseball picture, crowd the
dance floor in a nightclub, mill
around a bank lobby while the slar
cashes a check. ;
Their value to a producer Is far
more thai their ability to fill
screen with background people.
They are well trained aid dis
ciplined. They kaow what to ao
aad when to do R with a minimum
of fnss aad feathers. They kaow
how to make themselves busy on
earner without detracting from
what is going on In the foreground.
They kaow how to act like per
fectly normal, disinterested people.
They never get billing, of course,
and their names are familiar to
no one in the business but the
casting directors. Theirs, you
might say, is almost a labor of
love. Most of them hold down full
or part time jobs on the outside,
but they are devoted to the acting
profession and sometimes wish,
rather plaintively, that the acting
to them.
AS PREDICTED HERE not long
ago, Jimmy Durante Is calling It
quits with his current sponsor and
does his last show of the season
June 13. It's doubtful that he'll be
back la the fall. He wants to split
his 30 shows between live and film,
but the sponsor wanted more live
and fewer film aad so gets nothing
at ail. At leas! not from Durante.

AT THE SAME PARTY, Judy
Garland, slimmed down a little
but still not enough, seemed a good
deal calmer about her second TV
show, coming up Sunday night in
the "GE Theater" time spot. She's
being a little secretive this time
and won't name a single song, she
plans to sing. "Tune in and see,"
is alt she'll say on the subject.
MARK STEVENS, WHO seems
to keep expanding every week, has
added still another film series to
his production list. This one will
be "The Mysterious Traveler," to

old Mutual. radio show of the same
name. No star picked as yet for
the lead
STARDUST: CBS now plans to
