Catalogues Given U.S. in
Microfilm One Mile Long

of Congress Wednesday was given
almost a mile of microfilm: The
complete record of all the Sears,
" Roebuck mail order catalogues
since 1881. f
And to those who could remem
ber when the catalogue's chief
literary value was as source ma
terial for outhouse Jokes the whole
thing was a mite confusing. For
here was the librarian, L. Quincy
Mumford, pleased as anything, say
ing of the catalogues:

Radio Telescopes
May Outperform
Palomar's Lens
PASADENA, Calif. 1 - Twin
radio telescopes that may record
radio waves from objects farther j
away than any that can be seen
by Palomar's 200-inch light tele
scope are planned by California
Institute of Technology. j
The $300,000 installation will be
built six miles from Big Pine, Inyo
County, in the City of Los Angeles
Owens River aqueduct area, Cal
tech spokesmen reported this week.
The city has leased the site to the
institute.
Two radio telescopes, each con
sisting of a searchlight shaped
antenna 100 feet in diameter, will
move on 2,000-foot tracks running
at right angles to each other.
One will extend north to south,
the other east to we,st.
When the Big Pine instruments
locate a position from which radio
signals emanate, the Palomar light
telescope will be trained on the
spot in the hope of locating the
emanating object. Mt. Wilson's
light-gathering telescopes also will
be used. -. .

Covered Wag.a
The covered wagon, for example,
that once played such a vital role

hung gamely on in the Scars cata
logue until 1924.
In 1907, harness and saddles took
up 22 pages. Now they're .-dismissed
with one. In 1896, eager
dreamers had 30 pages of buggies
to drool over. By 1333, the auto
mobile had chased them out of the
catalogue altogether.
The early catalogues are a re
minder of many i vanishing, or
vanished, - social -custom. The
'bosom board, celluloid C O liar,
mourning handkerchief, Prince Al
bert suit, mustache cups, and
where would you turn these days
if you wanted to buy a sulky for'
s goat?
New Customs
On the other hand, the catalogues
record faithfully the new customs.
Men's pajamas showed up in 1899,
but here Sears was too pioneering
for a generation used to sleeping
in its long underwear. They didn't
appear again until 1901.
Ana silk stockings first went oh
sale in 1912. , "Treat them care
fully," the catalogue said.
Star Models
Many people now, well known In
other fields labored on the cata
logues. Norma Shearer, Jean Ar
thur. Gloria Swanson, Frederic
March, Joan Caulfield, Susan Hay-
ward, Anita Colby and Lauren Bn
call were models. Edgar Rice
Burroughs was a catalogue copy
writer before -he struck literary
gold with Tarxan.
Unfortunately, the catalogues,
vast as they are, still leave some
questions unanswered. It is hard to
see how there ever was much de
mand for some articles.
One item is especially intriguing.
How many people, do you suppose,
sent Sears $5 for an artificial glass
eye for a horse?
