Petition Asks
Welfare Pay of
Relatives Gut
A preliminary -petition for an In
itiative to reduce the payment! re
quired under the relative responsi
bility law was filed with the state
elections division Tuesday.
It was filed by the Institute of
Social Welfare, of which Floyd K.
Dover, Portland, if president.
The law requires persons to con
tribute to the support of needy
aged persons and other welfare
cases.
If 40,093 signatures are obtained
by July S, the measure would be on
the general election ballot next
November.
The State Supreme Court ruled
two weeks ago that the present
relative responsibility law 1s con
stitutional. The proposed new measure
would amend the constitution. .
It would greatly reduce the pay-

day he had been served with a
court summons for the lirst time
in his life.
It was in an action brought by
Woody Smith, Hood River, chal
lenging the eligibility of Wayne
Morse to hold the office of U.S.
senator as a Democrat. Smith is a
Democratic candidate for U.S.
senator at the primary election
against Morse.
The suit was filed in the Marion
County Circuit Court

A $19,198 personal' Injury lull
was filed Tuesday at Marion Coun
ty Circuit Court by the guardian of
Barbara Duncan, a minor, against

The complaint alleges negligent
driving by the defendant whose
automobile allegedly struck and
injured the girl as she alighted
from a school bus Dec. I, 1933.
The suit is for $19,000 general
damages and $196 medical and
hospital expenses.

the state department of agricul
ture, reported Tuesday, as a result
of recent hearings held in major
growing areas.
Short added the department will

for a growers' referendum on

the animal division, say the meet
