From 3:30 until 8:30 p.m., Con gregational laymen from this area will attend a Laymen's Institute at First Congregational church. Guest speakers will include Walter Graham, national director of the Congregational Laymen s Fellow ship, and Dr. Jackson Smith, as sociate secretary of the washing- ton Congregational Conference. At the mid-week Lenten meeting. March 21st at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Mark Talney, executive of the Oregon Council of Churches will speak on "The Ecumenical Movement and the Trend Toward Church Union." Methodist Choir Planning -Concert A Lenten season concert will be presented by the Sanctuary Choir of First Methodist church on Palm Sunday evening, March 25, at o'clock. The concert theme will be "The Teachings of Jesus Set to Music." The anthems and solos will be presented in the order in which they appeared in Jesus' ministry. Josephine Albert Spaulding will be special guest soloist, singing two numbers. Solo parts will be sung by Betty Starr Anderson. Alice Rose Jones, Coralie Dough' ton. Raymond Grant of the Oregon Conference of the Methodist Church will preside at the dedica tion of Trinity Methodist Church at Four Comers Sunday at the 11 o'clock service. Bishop Grant has an A.B. de gree from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, an honorary D.D. from Cornell and an LL.D. from the College of Puget Sound, Ta coma, Wash. He is a trustee of Willamette University and Willam ette View Manor, Portland. ' An important milestone has been reached at Trinity Methodist Church. Many months of prelimi nary planning and prayer preced ed the first meeting in the Com munity hall on June 27,' 1954 when 51 persons were present to hear Dr. George G. Roseberry, district superintendent, and Dr. Arthur H. Maynard xf the University of Mi- i. Florida? preside at that first service. On Aug. 1. 1954. the Rev. Joe Andrew Harding accepted the pas torate of the newly formed congre gation. He came here from the east having received a B.D. degree from Boston University, and a B.A. from Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. Sept. 12, 1954. was charter Sun day. One hundred and one persons became Charter members and the Rev. Mr. Harding was ordained as a minister. Under his leadership the congre gation outgrew the capacity of the Community Hall and Sept 26. 1954. saw the ground breaking cere mony where the present church building was erected. First ser vices were held in the new build ing on March 20, 1955. On Sunday, Just two days short of one year from date of the first servic ein the church, the mortgage will be burned at the dedication cere mony. , Dr. Roseberry will be the speaker at the 8:30 service and Bishop Grant will bring the dedicatory sermon at the 11 o clock service The congregation, looking to the future, recently approved an ad ditional building program that will facilitate the expanding church ac tivities. Africa Theme On Program For Sunday Africa, land of unrest and tur moil, will be discussed at the evening service of Salem Heights Baptist church Sunday. The Rev. John Nickel will be the guest speaker and show pictures of the work of the Sudan Interior Mission. . Progress on the new building of the church is seady. According to the church building committee the-'new educational unit should be ready within two months. The church is planning an adult Easter, play under the directions of Mrs. Hershel Frickey. It will be presented on Easter Sunday evening. Also, the music commit tee of the church has organized the adult choir, which presents a special musical rendition every Sunday morning. Plans are under way for the church Daily Vacation Bible school. The board of Christian education is in the process of ar ranging for the personnel, and the dates will be set within two weeks. The Rev. Elmer Hiebert is the pastor of the church and meetings are held temporarily in the Salem Heights Community hall. , Sunday School to Highlight Day For Congregation Mrs. Theodore Lind is chairman of a committee which has planned "Sunday School Sunday" for First Baptist Church on tomorrow. Throughout the day the Sunday School, with an approximate mem bership attendance of 175, will be featured at the services. The superindendent of the school, Emerson Teague, will participate, among others, in the morning wor ship hour. Children and youth from the various departments of the school will participate in musi cal numbers and Scripture num bers and Scripture memorization presentations during the 7:30 serv ice. Pastor Lloyd Anderson will speak at both services from the First Epistle of John. Unitarians to Hold Services At Salem YW Growth in the Salem Unitarian Church School has prompted the Unitarian Fellowship to move its regular meeting place from the Salem Women's Club to the YWCA beginning Sunday. The Fellowship was formed in September of 1949 and held its twice-monthly meetings in the Fireplace Room of the old YWCA. The Church School began in April of 1952 holding its classes for nine children in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Smithson.- That fall the growth merited the move to the Salem Woman's Club. Classes this year have been held for approximately 50 children and for the first time there has been a junior-high class. In the YWCA because of the number of rooms available the church school staff foresees more workable division of the various age groups. The adults will hold .services in the Social Room on the main floor. The Fellowship will hear Dr. Clara Simmerville this Sunday morning at 10:30 in the Social Room of the YWCA. She will turn marize a lecture series held by the Corvallis Unitarian Fellowship on the. subject "Are Wt Growing Toward Maturity as a Nation?" Dr. Simmerville has been trad- uated from Willamette University, has her M.A. from Oregon State College in the school fo Educa tion. She is at present the As sistant Dean of Women at Oregon State. Play Planned Sunday Night At Englewood The musical drama, "The Auto biography of Church Pew" writ ten by W. B. Evanr, will be pres ented Sunday evening at 7:30 at Englewod Evangelical United Brethren Church. The story centers about an aging church pew, tracing the exper iences of a particular church fam ily Along with the entire sanctuary choir and five soloists, the drama will stage a cast of 23 persons. All personnel in the drama are of Englewood Church. Berwin Murray will direct the musical portion, while Sharo Barker will be in charge of the action. Narrations will be done by Morris Goodrich and Hermalene Herring. Church Plans Mission Day Here Sunday Salem's Christian and Missionary Alliance Church will open its eight day annual missionary convention Sunday. . Visiting missionaries will feature the programs for both Sunday mornings and for the nightly mis sionary services at 7:30 p.m. through the convention period. Here are the three visiting mis sionaries for the church conven tion: Miss Agnette Hansen, missionary to India since 1924. She has trav eled from village to village in Cen tral India,. has taught 10 years at a Bible school and Girls' Boarding School at Khamgaon. Miss Enid Miller, who opened the first mission school for bush boys in, her section of French Equa torial Africa. She spent two mis sionary terms in the French colony of Gabon since 1947. Much of her work has been in jungle country. The Rev. John S. Swift, who has traveled afoot or horseback in the Peruvian Andes and in tropical jungles of the South American country. He preached and taught in the interior, spent a year on the staff of Peru Alliance Bible Insti tute at Huanuco.
