MT. ANGEL - Members of Mt.
Angel City Council will meet next
Monday night to make an estimate
of the city census, using the city
water patrons as a basis.
The council realizes that the
population has Increased consider
ably since the last census in 1950,
but hesitates to arrange a house-to-house
census because of the cost
to the city. Since all residents
within the city limits are signed
up for city water, it was thought
a simple way to check.
Over Z09 Addri
Seventeen new houses were built
since 1950 and over 200 residents
added, but since the legislature de
crees that those working or at
tending schools in other towns may
not be counted on the hometown
census, many will have to be ruled
out. -
Water Commissioner Pete Meiss-
ner reported that houses are gradu
ally being numbered. His report
also told of the large number of
trees being planted at the grounds
surrounding the sewage disposal
plant, including white fir, Norway
spruce and cedar.
Ass't Chief Due Back
Joe Faulhaber, assistant to the
chief of police, who recently re
turned from the hospital, attended
the council meeting and said he
would soon report back to work.
Chief Merle Grace reported one
arrest for traffic violation with a
60-day suspension of driver's li
cense as a penalty.
Three fires were listed for the
month by Fire Chief Francis
Schmidt, one in the city and two
in the district.
Franchise Shifted
The franchise for the city gar
bage collection was transferred
from H. B. Samuel to R. F. Bren
tano. The telephone franchise is
also expiring and k was agreed to
meet with Manager John T. Bau
man of the Mt. Angel Telephone
Co. to discuss a new franchise.
Councilman Joe Wagner reported
that the No. 2 city well is being
Investigated and the pump cleaned
and repaired, a complete report to
be given at the next meeting; and
Carl Mucken of the street commit
tee reported considerable damage
to city streets by the. excessive

In Classroom
EDMORE. Mich. W- An eighth
grader whipped a pistol from his
shirt and shot a classmate Mon
day in an Edmore High School
classroom.
As panic-stricken children ran
screaming for the door, 14-year-old
Peter Ray Forgar fired a wild
shot over their heads and fainted.
The first shot hit William Shur
low, 15, in the neck. Hospital offi
cials in this Montcalm County
community said, however, he was
not critically hurt. His condition
was described today as "not ser-i
kus."
Sheriff Elton Sampson quoted
Forgar as saying he had a grudge
against the older boy. The two had
fought last week and Forgar,
small for his age, had had his
glasses broken by the bigger jShur
low boy. ,
"Apparently he (Forgar
thought this was a . way to get
even," Sampson said.
The shooting occurred in the
math class. Forgar suddenly rose,
pulled out the gun and fired. Shur
low was sitting about 1 feet away
in the same row of desks. Forgar
was taken to the hospital for treat
ment after he fainted.
He was held by juvenile author
ities for investigation.
Sampson said Forgar's father,
George, owned the pistol.
