Executive of Soviet News Agency Silent to Senate Probers' Queries About Spies
By ED OR EACH
WASHINGTON i-The top-rank-Inc
American executive of Tass,
the Soviet News Agency, re
fused Tuesday to tell senate inves
tigators w hether he has associated
with Russian spies.
Harry Freeman, once descrihed
by ex-Communist Whittaker Cham
bers as a "black tic" Communist
intellectual, firmly denied how
ever that he himself has engaged
in espionage.
Freeman, deputy manager for
Tass in this country, was one of
three Soviet News Agency em
ployes called by a senate internal
security subcommittee in a study
of how the Kremlin may operate
in the United States outside Com
munist party channels.
Whiie Freeman is the top Amer
ican in the Tass bureau in this
country, he is actually second in
command since, he testified, the
bureau is headed by Leonid Veil
Chansky, a Soviet citizen.
Reads From Book
There was a strain of irony in
Tuesday's hearing. Benjamin
Mandel, the committee's raaearch
director, read a passage from !
Chambers' book, -"Witness," de-l
icribine Freeman is a rinriiratrH
communist the type who "con
spires in black ties" with the
backing of Soviet arms.
The slight, bald Freeman wear
ing a brown suit and brown tie
smilingly declined to comment on
the passage or to say whether he
ever knew Chambers " one-time

figure in the Alger e.

Freeman and two other Tass
staffers. Hays Jones and Mrs.

ris asked Freeman if during his
employment with Tass he has "As
sociated with anyone you knew
to be active in Soviet espionage."
Changes Answer
"Not to my knowledge," Free
man replied at first. But he
changed his answer, and invoked
the Fifth Amendment privilege
against self incrimination, after
Morris asked if he knew such per
sons as Hede Massing, self
acknowledged former Soviet agent.
"I'll decline to answer that,"
Freeman said when asked a sec
ond time if he had knowlingly as
sociated with Soviet spies. He re
fused to say whether he knew a
number of persons whose names
were read to him, including one
time communist underground lead
er Gerhart Eisler.
Gathers News
In an opening statement Free
man described Tass as a legiti
mate news-gathering agency and
questioned whether th"e committee

Yuri Rostvorov, a one-time Sov

recently that M to 90 per cent
of Tass' employes are Soviet mili

Jones, an employe of Tass com

questioning - that he was the
American ''Comrade Jones" who
addressed a meeting of the Com
muni.st International in 1928.
"Jones is a relatively common
name," the witness said dryly.
"It might be Jesse Jones."
He apQarently was referring
facetiously to the Texas million

official.
Jones likewise scoffed at a ques
tion as to whether he once told an
Illinois Communist official he nad

"To blow up ships."

Jury Indicts Tv in Boys for Scout Slaying
WHEELING, W. Va. to - Fourteen-year-old
twins Joseph and
Thomas Williams, Jr., were in
dicted Tuesday for the murder of
9-year-old Cub Scout David Pow
ell. The Ohio County Grand Jury,
recalled to consider the case
against the twins, returned the
Jant indictment after a two and
one-half hour session.
David Powell's body was found
in a cellar, sometimes used as a
boys' hideout, under the Williams
home on Feb. 10. His head was
crushed, and a bloody two-by-four
lay beside him.
The young Scout was last seen
selling tickets to a benefit, show
planned by his Cub Scout pack.
One of the twins had stains on a
pair of trousers. Prosecutor Jo
seph A. Gompers would not make
public the analysis findings on the
stains until after the grand jury
had heard the report.
