Protests Aired Venus was withdrawn from com petition after the citizens commit tee was barraged with verbal and written protests from Salem rest' dents. The Renoir "objet dart now on display in a Portland mu seum. The seven proposals now at Bush Museum all date from the Venus affair. One of the earliest of the seven proposals to be submitted was from Dr. Avard Fairbanks, art consultant at, Utah University and former professor at the University of Oregon. The Fairbanks model shows a heroic-sized white marble statute of a pioneer family entitled "The Guidance of Youth." New Fields Concerning his creation Fair banks said, "The youth is ventur ing forth into new fields with the guiding influence of .those who are concerned with his welfare and future. The mother and father. . . suggest the pioneer heritage and background of the youth of today." Another proposal from the Blaes- Ing Granite Co. of Portland, de picts a model of a huge vertical slab of solid colored and polished marble approximately 40 feet long and 14 feet high, weighing more than 45 tons, and fastened to six equally spaced columns. Across the face of the memorial is carved a relief map showing a strip of land about 200 miles wide extend ing from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, with the Oregon trail at the center Vermont Firm The Vermont Marble Company submitted a third set of sketches offering four suggestions. One of the suggestions is of a life-sized log cabin in front of which is a group of four pioneer greeting two Indians. The other sketches show various uses of solid marble towers. Creswell sctnptor Wesley W. Nightingale's interpretation of what the Moores bequest should be is entitled "Pioneer Mother," consisting of a mother and child to be cast in bronze. Photographs of the Nightingale model show with strong forward movement and flowing lines a child being carried by its mother. Salem Sculptress . . Salem sculptress Frances Kells Mac Collin created two models for consideration, which she entitled "Tall Timber" and "Spirit of the Oregon Pioneer." Mrs. Mac Collin said that "Tall Timber' symbolizes "an Oregon pioneer family conversing, simula ting love, protection and under standing. . .the little boy has just asked his father a question. . .and is waiting to hear his answer." Of the "Spirit of the Oregon Pioneer," the sculptress said "Those who lead the way make trail for those who follow. The trail is threading its way down through the figures from the tip of the fingers of the trail blazer. Largest Vote It is the latter work that has received the largest number of votes from citizens so far visiting the collection at Bush Museum The Salem Art Association also has voted to recommend the "Spirit of the Oregon Pioneer" for selection by the board of trustees A noted Portland sculptor. Fred eric Littman, recently submitted illustrations of an impressive 60 foot long memorial. It would con sist of a 12 foot 3 inch high pioneer family in bronze on a pedestal centered in a 20-foot opening be tween the ends of two 20-fot walls each 4 feet 3 inches high. Lumber-hauling firms obtained a restraining order Jan. 28 against the Teamsters Union. When the Teamsters Union, attempting to organize truck drivers, had posted pickets, the Longshoremen's Union refused to unload trucks. - After Circuit Judge Fred Mo Henry of Newport issued the restraining order, the unions asked the federal Judge here for an order dissolving McHenry's action, asserting the matter was labor dispute under the Taft-Hartley Law and belonged in federal Jurisdiction. (from the Moores wil) that all income from the trust go to cer tain relatives of Mr. Moores. It was only after the death of those relatives that the provision calling for the pioneer memorial, became effective. Vague Will The vagueness of the Moores will concerning the kind of mem orial to be erected has been the principal factor delaying selection. The specific paragraph of the will reads as follows: , ''I (Carroll L. Moores) appoint the Ladd and Bush Trust Co. (now the Pioneer Trust Co.) of Salem, Oregon, as executors of this my last will and testament with in structions after executing all pro ceeding articles of this will to use the remainder of my estate in the purchase of a monument or mem orial to be erected in memory of the early Oregon Pioneers to be presented to the city of Salem, Oregon, to be placed where the City Council or their successors in city government may determine." At the time the memorial pro vision became effective the estate amountel to $23,476. Accumulated interest has expanded the trust fund to what is now almost $36,-000. Recent Proposal The most recent proposal to be submitted is from Bryant Baker of New York. It, too, is of a pioneer family group, "heroic" in size. In part Baker describes the family trio as representing "a sturdy, honest hardworking family that has recently settled and is gather ing one of its first wheat harvests.' Carroll L. Moores, a former elevator operator for the state, died Jan. 6, 1937.
