OVER THE SOUTH POLE,
'drinyedi wt-lt Ig now 7:M pm,
Friday, Jan. I . New Zealand
time. 2:28 a.m.. KST. A minut
ago we were ilytnf south. Without
changing cmirie, we are now fly
ing north. Eighteen hundred leel
below u lie the preclne bottom
of the world from which all di
rections are north. Thii it the
magical 90 degree aouth latitude
one of the two most exclusive navi
gational positions on earth. ThJs
Is the South Pole for which men
have died in the reaching.
We have Just completed a circle
of five miles radiui. Thus we have
flown around the world In five
minutes.
There art 10 of us aboard the
Sie-a base fliers of Operation
pfreeu and I bug-eyed cor
respondent. Their boredom is un
derstandable aince. for most of
tha crw of the four-englned sky
master, this Is their second flight
aver the pole in 11 days. The
eicitement of this correspondent
is equally understandable.
Less thaa 40 men have been
here before us. This Is only the
fifth flight In all history over the
pole and I. they tell me, am the
first reporter to fly over It,
N Adjectives
Now what does a good reporter
do in such an exclusive spot? He
reaches into his book of adjectives
for a ringing description on the
epic level. This will now be done
in one broken-hearjed line:
All I can see below, above and
to the left and right of our orange
tipped wings is a dirty white blur.
This is a whiteout the Antarctic
trick of refraction by which light
bounces off billions of minute ice
particles and results in zero visi
bility. It is just my luck to strike
it now..
Plaae Ceeaotaader
"Don't feel bad," says our color-
ful, heavily mustached plane com
mander, . Lt. Col. Hal R. Kolp.
Marine pilot from Akron.
"You didn't miss anything. The
pole is exactly like the rest of the
dull, flat snow-covered plateau we
have been flying over all day."
Nates of FUgkl '
It la now. almost five hours
later and we have Just landed al
McMurdo Base with our sense of
history completely numbed by the
exhausting flight which covered
1700 stiles and took 14 hours. His
tory will have to be content with
.my diary notes of the whole flight
which follow: . r
l:4S a.m. The plane on the ice

Oxygea Short
As I finger the oxygen mask.
Kolp says "we will have to go easy
on the oxygen sine the supply is
short."-- -
Inside the main cabin are only
three seats. The rest of the space
is occupied by duffle bags, sleep
ing bags, survival rations and
gear.
Takeoff. Halfway down the run
way the plane bounced on an ice
crack, then leaped forward as the
jet booster bottles went off with
a roar. As the wheels pulled up.
a small thought occurred to me
this is Friday the 13th.
10:1 a.m. On the right are the
brown and black peaks of the
Brittania range some 13,000 feet
high, sticking up from the snow.
I see glaciers filling valleys and
stretching between peaks like a
taut bed sheet.
The music of Benny Goodman
and Dixieland Jazx is coming over

looking rt the endless plateau
wrinkled by hummocks you
wonder how thick the i is under
the snow. It could be several
miles deep. Is there land or water
underneath? Is this really one con
tinent or several huge islands
separated by seas? Nobody knows.
This Is one of the things the IGY
(International Geophysical Year)
scientists will try to answer.
Mlsslea Attained jduwn and yelling over th roar of

in the overcast the same plateau
we have been flying over all day
not a mountain, hill, animal or
Howard Johnson in sight. We have
now turned left and are heading
poleward via the 20th meridian.
Ahlin la getting ready to drop a
small orange paper chute lo be

7:24 Navigator to pilot, pointing
colonel shrugged and replied: "All
right, we will circle th pule but
It Is useless to drop a marker,"
Nalklag la Sheet
A few minutes ago I had to b
awakened for the big moment. 1
raced for the cameras but there
was nothing to shoot unless you
like blank paper. But I did ob
serve the occasion by dropping an
improvised AP flag, red letters
on a piece of canvas, along with
a flag made of the bed sheet by
the boys on the UJ.S. Wyandot
Tha Associated Press now has
staked a claim to the first South
