'Tm certainly glad I got over my youth," she proclaims. "That is a terrible time." Miss Gordon, one of the half dozen senior great ladies of the Ajnericsn theater, is celebrating her 40th anniversary in show business right now with perhaps her biggest triumph, the title role in Thornton Wilder'! "The Matchmaker" at the Royale. It has, she says, brought the "most extraordinary" notices of her career, this after a seven years' absence from Broadway. A lady of forthright candor, Miss Gordon unhesitatingly dis cusses with one and all her pro fessional anniversary and her age, which is 59. Doing All Right "Lots of us who aren t chick ens any more are doing all right these days," she. chuckles, ticking off achievements of such sister celebrities as Fontanne, Cornell and Hayes. The salad years, she reflects, are apt to be full ot heartaches, heartburn and sore arches. "It would have been a great comfort to know 40 years ago that today I'd be having a big triumph," she points out. Versatility is part of the Gor don full-life formula, for besides being a star player, she is a play wright of no mean skill, a creator of short stories, and, in private life, the wife of Garson Kanin, another author and one of tie theater's most-sought directors. She explains where the energy and time for so many endeavors is obtained. "I eat an awful lot," the petite star avers. "And acting doesn't a.u Bui.... U use ud 100 niui'U umc aucr if presents Man, Mi nd-Cy il hearsalf-whert you get-s;oing.-Rltrhard In a return ,TV engagement Thpre are all those afternoons to spare." Currently she Is working on a play "The Cook Book," and also has In her trunk a novel. The latter led to the former. The main problem with her prose efforts "is always the ssme, it's the length. I generally write 20 times too much. Separate Ways She and Kanin pursue separate writing ways, until a product is finished "We're both very lndi vidualistic and while 1, don't mind what you may say about my writ ing, one thing I can't stand is constructive criticism. Although she would like some dav to Dlav'in her own new drama, she hopes next to do "A Month in the Country," with her husband directing her for the secoqd time in their careers. One of the most pleasant vir tues of being before the public a long time, she says, is the way in which an actress suddenly finds herself "strangely tied into the lives of so many people." Fans write often to tell her of the anniversaries snd birthdays in their lives which sre asso ciated with seeing one ot her performances. "A most extraordinary thing It vis," Miss Gordon comments with an appreciative glow. Her acting assignments nsve ranged from Barrie's "Peter Pan", (her first show, in 1913 with Maude Adams) to Ibsen's "A Doll's House," but there's no doubt In her mind what type of racting gives her the biggest kick. Hard Werk The hesw dramas of Ibsen int aimltar vjrifora "are hard work, but they are the roles you stretch your talent with. "However, the real thrill comes in comedy when you hear an au dience screaming with laughter. It's wonderful to be out there with a rollicking bunch of peo ple. It's more relaxing too." Miss Gordon, at 40 and 59, doesn't seem eager to overdo the relaxing. When a cheerful voice and a bright and shining face are suddenly m 1 1 1- ing, it is only then that you realize how much you have counted on their presence. This particu lar friend, whom I have known well for eight years now, lives with me and is gener ally the life of the household. But even the best ot friends can blow a fuse. For the past two days we haven't even been speaking. First it was Frank Carney's 'The Righteous Are Bold," which unfolds at the Holiday as an awkward attempt to tell of an Irish girl literally "possessed of the devil." Eddie Dowling, as producer and director, has re gretfully missed creating the il lusion of credibility. In brilliant contrast is Sean O'Casey's "Red Roses for Me" at the Booth. A sensitively precise cast that is large and mostly Gaelic has been fused by Director John A'Shaughneisy into a com polling theatrical experience. It is based on labor troubles in Dublin of the 1930 s, and much of the mirth of its first half gives way to ominous sadness later; but the performance is so su perior and the golden language of O Casey so limpid that a spec tator' must be csse-hardened in deed not to feel it a memorable evening.
