Price Spread Between U.S. Farmers9 Receipts,
Housewives9 Costs Up 83 Per Cent Since 1945

WASHINGTON )-S.'cretray
of Asrlclutur Benson aid Mon
dsy the spread between what the
. . farmer receives for his products
and the prke paid by the house
wife has increased 83 per cent
line 1M3.
Benson released report by
' Agriculture department experts
whlcb attributed the increased
pap between farmer-consumer
prices to risiiff costs of handling
food ill along the line from farm
to market.
In announcing last rhonljj that
he had requested the study, Ben
son said he had discussed the
problem with President Eisen
- howcr nd both were agreed 'it
must be determined "whether or
not prices paid by consumers
contain Improper or excessive
, . marketing charges and profits."
The- experts reported that the
spread between farm and retail
prices of food has been a primary
factor inJhe decline in the (arm-
er'i share Of the consumers' re
tail food dollar from a high of
53 per, .rent in 1943 to an average
of 41 per cent in 1955.
Farmer income has been de
clining during the past several
years. The department recently
, . said farm prices were 7 per cent
below those of a year ago. At
the same time, prices paid by the
farmer for things he needs have
not come down proportionately. ,
The spread bctwecnvfarm and
retail food prices, Joriay's depart
ment report said, has widened

fuel, equipment, rents and such
up about two-thirds. State and
local property taxes havejincreas-
erj substantially.
Benson said the nation's food
marketing bill increased from 9
billion dollars in 1940 to 32 bil
lion dollars in 1933. Several Me
lon were listed as accounting for
the 23 billion dollar increase:
1. A 40 per cent rise In the vol
ume of food handled. This ac
counts for four billion dollars of
I the Increase.
2. A general Increase In all
prices and costs has rouchly
doubled the charges fop market
ing operations; This accounts for
13 billion dollars of the increase.
3. Payments for marketing
services that did not exist in
1940 account for six billion dol
lars of the increase.
The report said that as a per
centage of the sales dollar, prof
its of food marketing firms have
shown no marked trend In recent
years.
It said profits of a group of
large food processors, wholesale
distributors and retail food
chains have grown substantially
since 1943. ' However, it laid, this
increase has been due primarily
to the increased volume of food
sales handled by these firms.

first 1,800 mon-of the new West
German army, navy and air force
started training- Monday.
At Andernach, 800 officers and
ftic-n started "a three -month bas;c
framing course. At three U. S.
air wee bases in southern Ger
many 650 future pilots of the new
air force entered courses with
- Americans as instructors. At W'il-
. he'lmhaven, the first 165 volunteers
for the new navy were organized
under command of Lt. Cmdr. U.
Resehke, a former U-boat captain.
And at Noervenich in the Rhine
land, 180 technicians and mainte
nance men of the air, force began
training. " . "
Tt Be Instructors
The army trainees at Andernach
will become instructors for future
training battalions that will serve
as a nucleus for the 12 divLsion
army. Within a week, the first
American weapons to be supplied
to the Wehrmacht undqf the nvli-

include rifles, machincguns, pis-

shortage is of lieutenants. The
youngest World War II lieutenant
is by now 30 years old and consid-'

The aim of the training her is
to create- an ultra-modern army
with efficient soldiers and still treat
them as citlzens-in-uniform, in con

drill of the Nazi army. In thVold
