Spartans Hold
Rough Drills
Bruins Co Through
Defensive Workout
PASADENA, Calif. - The
Michigan stale football team
' ataged what may be its toughest
scrimmage Tuesday while the
Spartans' Rose Bowl rivals, UCLA,
went through a defensive drill on
passing that brought praise from
Coach Red Sanders.
Michigan State came up with
ore casualty. Arch Matsos, a soon
omore guard from Detroit, suf
fered a leg injury, the extent of
which won't be known until later.
Matsos is ranked behind another
sophomore, Dan Currie, the start
ing left guard.
Duffy Avoids Ctmmeal
Coach Duffy Daugherty had !
fourth string quarterback. Mtk
Panitch from Chicago, leading the !
attack a la UCLA's single wing
gainst the first team.
The boys were hitting hard but
Daugherty. asked what he thought
about his regulars, turned , the
question aside with the comment:
"The scouting team looked
good."
At UCLA, rookie Edison Griffin
played the part of Earl Morrill,
Michigan State's All-America quar
terback. Griffin is a fair passer
but the best he could do was com
plete two out of about 35 passes.
Brawa Slap Passes
Halfback Sam Brown intercept
ed two passes and two other
backs, Jim December and Bob
Davenport, also impressed the
coaches with their defensive work.
Sanders called it the best de
fensive session "in a long time."
Sanders said his star passer, in
jured Ronnie Knox, will get into
active practice next week. Recov
ering from a broken leg bone,
Knox has been a close observer
of all that has gone on in the Rose
Bowl preparations.

high weight of a champion for the
$100,000 Santa Anita handicap Feb.

And his runner-up for 3-year-old
honors of 1953, Swaps, rates next.
So it was Tuesday when Racing
Secretary Jimmy Kilroe of Santa
Anita handed Nashua 130 pounds
and Swaps 129 for the big race.
It is doubtful that Nashua will;
fly from his announced racing en-;

But racing fans have hopes he
might, to resume his feud with
California's Swaps. -

Two things that make for SAFER driving I
t
The first and most important thing is you
-the driver. As the highway safety or
ganizations and law enforcement agencies
point out, the courtesy, care, and common
sense you show count more than anything
else. You can drive any car safely or
foolishly.
The second thing is the car itself. All
cars are safer today. That's shown by the
number of accidents in relation to the
number of miles passenger cars are
driven. -The figure's been going down
steadily and sharply.
Chevrolet engineers and designers have
always made your safety a major consid
eration, introducing many such features
as the all-eteel top, safety plate glass all
around, and windshield-wide defrosters
into the low-price field. And this '56 Chev
rolet is the safest one ever built
Its lively new power means safer pass
ing. Its special Ball-Race steering-the
oversize brakes with Anti-Dive control
the Unisteel construction and safety door
latches of its Fisher Body-the nailed-to-the-road
stability that comes from outrig
ger rear springs, an advanced suspension
system and better balance the sweeping
panoramic windshield - all these things
add to your safety.
Seat belts with or without shoulder
harness? Instrument panel padding? Of
course, they're available at extra cost on
your new Chevrolet. But the best protec
tion of all is to keep out of accidents in
the first place. And that depends mostly
on you arjd the built-in safety of your car.
As your Chevrolet dealer, we'll b glad
to show you the many safety features of
the '56 Chevrolet.
