WOOD BLEACHING 1
DO ... for best results, use a
commercial wood bleach even if
you have heard that somebody
did a satisfactory job with a
home-made bleach.
DO . . . carefully follow the di
rections which come with the
bleach you purchase, because there
are different types applied in dif
ferent ways.
DO , . . consider a trick some
times used by professionals
bleaching the wood even lighter
than necessary and then using just
a touch of a non-grain-raising
stain to give the wood exactly the
right tint
DO . . . cover such a stain with
a coat of white shellac, diluted
half and half with denatured al
cohol, followed by varnish, lac
quer or whatever finish you de
sire. DO ... be certain to remove
all hardware from the piece of
furniture being bleached so that
the metal will not be marred.
DON'T . . . forget that bleach
ing is the name given to the
lightening of wood by the use of
chemicals; it should not be con
fused with the lightening of wood
by the application of a pigmented
undercoat
DON'T . . . attempt to bleach
over an old finish, which must
first be thoroughly removed.
DON'T . . . neglect a thorough
washing of the wood after the
bleaching is completed; the direc
tions will teu you what to use
I for the washing.
I DON'T . . . fail to wear rubber
1 gloves during the entire bleaching
i process.
DON'T . ".' ; try to bleach wood
with the hydrogen peroxide ordi
. narily used as an antiseptic; It
'simply isn't strong enough.

been told that fuchsiaa wui bloom

do? 8JE.C .
Answer The change In temper
atures and humidity will do this.
Fuchsias will, however, bloom in
doors if the atmosphere isn't too
hot d dry. A comparatively cool
house, with not toe dry heat, and
you can grow nice indoor fuchlas,
particularly of the dwarf standard
type. If you have a porch, or
some other place, frost-free,
where the trailers can hang, they,
too, will bloom indoors.
Qaestlaa Went out to see the
cherry buds on our trees and they
all seem soft Does that mean
we'll have no cherries this sum
mer? S.S.G.
Answer That's something we'll
just have to wait to see. Undoubt
edly the fruit, in many orchards,
will have been "thinned.". Whe
ther the loss stops at that won't
be known for sometime yet Per
haps we'll just have many less

Aaswer You can get a mater

the water. This keepe the water
odorless, and will also help keep
the tree i in better condition. It is
nke to use for all bouquets that
are difficult for water chancing.

Latest Idea to bring year-round

Proposed Rail
Rate Cut Hit
By Cattlemen
ELLENSBURG - Officials of
the Washington Cattlemen's Assn.
Saturday promised to supply the
Washington Public Service Com
mission with data to support the
association's opposition to a pro
posed rail rate reduction on meat
products from the Midwest te. the
Pacific Coast
The association has ' asked the
commission to intervene in the In
terstate Commerce Commission
hearing Jan. II at Salt Lake City.
Chairman Ralph Davis of the
Washington Public Service Com
mission said Friday hr Oiympla
the commission would be willing to
intervene if it could be shown
the proposed 80-cent reduction in
freight rates on meat products
would adversely affect the general
public.
John McMlnime of Outlook, pres
ident of the cattlemen, said Satur
day the livestock industry needs
the help of the commission at the
ICC hearing and will be given the
data to support the association's
charge that the proposed cut would
result in "dumping' of meat pro
ducts on the Pacific Coast .
Goodwin Chase of EUensburg,
chairman of the assoclaton's legis
lative committee, said of the pro
posed cut:
"The danger of this proposal la
that it will adversely affect both
the producer and the meat in
dustry. Instead of being encour
aged to expand their operations,
they will be faced with unfair com
petition and the meat situation in
the West will become worse instead
of better."
