.6ne of the unique football teams in. valley history was re-
called by oldtimers, at Monmouth last week with the passing of
James Riddell, 79 . J . While attending Oregon Normal School
(now OCE) Riddell and five of his brothers played on the
'same-team . . . Five' classmates rounded out the eleven which
1 sometimes was called the Riddell Brothers team . . Their
'victories included one over Chemawa Indian School , . . And
. I in those days Chemawa often compared with the best college
; teanw in the state. ' " '. . .
Football wasn't the only sport for the Riddell brothers .. . Out
at their father's ranch they made a small private track to practice
" bicycle racing, another popular sport of the era . . . The track was
!a popular rendezvous for young Monmouth blades of the day In
; eluding Pete and Gene Tatom, Bid Waller, Dsn - Howell, Frank
i Fisher, Curtis Hawley, Dell Ireland and Curt McGrew . . . And of
course the Riddell Brothers, James, Ed, Dave, Leslie, John and Will.

The tragic death of Lt. James Todd of Salem in Pacific
maneuvers near Camp Pendleton, Calif., last week was ac
companied by one of those incidents that is beyond the realm
of human understanding ... Because of the maneuvers, Lt.
; Todd's wife, the former "Ann Gibbens of Salem, had not seen
her husband for .three weeks prior to the night he drowned
... And yet the accident happened within sight of the cot
tage where she wasfsleeping ... . That night Mrs. Todd dreamed
that he1 husband had drowned ... She awoke with a start -at
2:30 a.m: . . . Not until noon was she informed what had
happened . . . The rubber boat her husband was riding" in 'had
capsized at 2:30 a.m.
, One of those exchanges of kindness that warm the heart
teas .culminated ai Silverton last week . . .Because they are
fond of children, Mr. land Mrs.' Arthur Dahl often serve as
volunteef baby sitters for many of their neighbors . . . Last
week fire destroyed the home of the Dahls . . . The Dahls suc
ceeded in renting another house, but it was in need of clean
ing . . . So the neighbors whom the Dahls had befriended got
together and scrubbed the floors, hung new wallpaper and
put up new curtains before the Dahls moved in.

At least one valley Democrat who has a part on the program
at the Averill Harriman dinner at Milwaukie Tuesday night has a
bunch the New York governor will announce his candidacy for
president at the dinner . . . A more prevailing belief Is that he Is
out here to help Wayne. Morse ... And didthose form letters the
. Mark Hatfield committee .sent to registered Republicans Friday get
lost in the mail for two months? . . . Some of them (maybe all)
were dated September 18.
Win or lose, football coaching is a hazardous profession . . .
The number of losing coaches who have been hanged in effigy
: this season has been well publicized . . . And a few days ago
when Sheridan won iU traditional battle with Willamina, the
Sheridan players -celebrated by.. grabbing their Coach Don
Hosford as he walked into the; locker room and. tossing him
Into the Jihowersl. I . .. (
James Dean, the young movie actor who was killed in an auto
wreck near Paso Robles, Calif- this fall, jumped to an early' lead
In Audience Award voting which opened Thursday at Salem the
aters i . . Other early choices of Salem audiences included James
Stewart, Doris Day and Ava Gardner, while Mr, Roberts was favorite
for best movie . . J Also right up there with leaders was Fess Parker,
,ior his portrayal of Davey Crockett ... "It must be the kid vote,"
.aid movie mgr. Pete Jones . . . "Only serious acting Fess Parker
ever did was grinning a bear." -.
Over at JFalls! City, some high school girls have organized
Hope Chest Club . . . They meet regularly to work on things
for their hope chests . . . Their officers are Donna Long, Mary
Dennis and'Marguerite Fern . . . And their slogan is "Destina

Log Jam at Dallas
Threatens Bridge
By HAL NORBERG
. Statesman Correspondent
DALLAS Crews Saturday afternoon started clearing a large
log jam which had threatened the Levens Street bridge here since
late Friday. .
The logs were backed tip for 100 feet behind the bridge in the
ratting waters of Rickreall Creek. Swollen Friday by heavy rain
and melting snows, the creek had dropped almost two feet by
Saturday noon.
City crewmen and telephone
linemen spent Saturday forenoon
removing two large trees which
dropped on the bridge and adja
cent telephone cable. No outages
occurred as the table did not
break. The upstream bridge rail
ing was broken by the mishap.
Just Missed Couple
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wiedeman
were narrowly missed by the first
tree which fell about 11 p.m. Fri
day. The couple was standing in
the middle of the concrete struts
ture viewing the log jam.
Wiedeman has an $18,000 con
tract for widening the bridge to
provide a 30-foot roadway and
five-foot walks on each side.
Work on the project started in
late September and is due for
completion ly Dec. 31. With 19-
foot roadway and orie small walk,
the bridge had long been a haz
ard for youngsters attending
Lyle School.
Temporarily Closed
Dave Warren, street superin
tendent, said that the structure
will be temporarily closed to traf
fic due to the work being carried
on now. C ' '
Warren said that about two
days will be required to clear the
