It was the first snow of Novem
ber and the children ran singing
With the white joy. Autumn's gold
and rust ' grew black under the
push of whiteness; the light snow
fiLted all the open stages of earth
but left the firs and, the deciduous
with black pccket3 t their feet.
For there were no shadows as
there was no light, the sky seemed
like a dark dragging keel moored
in a white mortar breaking loose
it its edges. The lack of snow in
the pockets under tfee and bush
gave the illusion of shadow but
shadows that seemed deep:' caves
seemed to open up within and on
the edges of white. Frbjps if the
leaves were pushed, back an en
trance could be found into winter?
Snow snuffs tot sound and color
feat brings la.ghter red cheeks
U children. Snow gives a hori
zontal remoteness U the la ad yet
brings forth a familiarity,' a friend
liness nder the scoffed scatter of
young spontaneity that shatters the
horizontal U spring the bound of
boot, the bobbing of tassel and
hair, the cry and Joy into the white
Eden. On the white slate of. the
first snow children etch the record
of their discovery, give the impress
of their acceptance of the land
weighted sky.
- For in the countless flakes pack
ed into a soft solid, filled with air
and moisture, they touch the magic
of sky. -They pack between hands
the artifacts of cold and moisture,
they fling it back into its begin
nings, watch it fallback to earth
and never seem to realize the vast
distances of space, and time that
they have handled.

Pattern
Travelers are Departing on
Extended Trips This Week
Mid-winter and holiday travelers are many, with several Salem
folk departing this week to spend Thanksgiving elsewhere. Gov
ernor and Mrs. Paul L. Patterson are leaving bv Diane Mondav for
"Tucson, Arizona, where they, will spend Thanksgiving with their
fon and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. Patterson, Jr. The
Pattersons will be Thanksgiving dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Howard spiane of Salem and
Tulsa, Oklahoma, who are spend
ing the winter in Tucson. The
Splanes recently left Salem for the
South after spending the fall at
their country place. The Hermit
age. .
To Miami and New York
From Arizona the Pattersons
will fly to Miami, where the gov
ernor will speak "at the annual
meeting of the American Muni
cipal Association. On November 29
'the Pattersons will leave for
Washington, D.C., where they will
attend the White House Conference
on Education, and on to New York
City December 2 to spend the
weekend. Present plans are that

To Fly to Hawaii
- Leaving by plane for Honolulu
on Wednesday - will be Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Willett. who will spend
Thanksgiving in the Islands. On
November 27 Mrs. Willett will be
one of the judges at the show of
the Cocker Spaniel Specialty Club
of Hawaii. Mr. Willett was a judge
at the same show in 1932. The
travelers will be away several
weeks.
Miss Schryver in East
retraining lor the Last on
Friday to spend Thanksgiving was
Miss Edith Schryver. She will be
with members of her family in
Kingston. New York for the holi
day week. Later she will go on to
New York City to spend a fort
night visiting longtime friends and
attending the stage shows. En?
route Miss Schryver will visit
several days in Chicago. She will
return to Oregon on December 18.
To Leave for Texas
Mr. and Mrs. Howard L. Jenks
are flying to Texas on November
25, where. Mr. Jenks will attend
the Southern Seedmen's convention
in Dallas. They plan to stop at
various pllces enroute and will be
away a fortnight.

the refreshments stand recently
when she noticed she was missing
one earring. She had just stopped
looking for it when a young man
walked up to the stand with an
