WASHINGTON, tfl J. Chief
Mailman Arthur E. Summerfield
Wednesday offered a act of tipt I

, And he topped his advice with
a "Shop(EarIy-Mail Early" plea.
The postmaster general says he
expects to see the largest Christ
mas mail load in history this
year. He announced last night
that the nation's railroads have
joined the department in the an
nual drive for .early mailings, to
promote speedier deliveries,
through use" c railroad station
loud speakers, and through inclu
sion of this theme in railroad ad
vertising copy and on dining car'
menus. . . ' . j
Cooperation Asked " ' I
Postmasters throughout " the
country have been asked to work j
with their local newspapers and
broadcasting outlets to' push the1
idea. - j :.
Summerfield noted that all
postoffices are 'giving free on re
quest an illustrated pamphlet
titled "Packaging and Wrapping
Parcels for Mailing." He said that
right packing, right wrapping and j
right addressing are the three
keys to easy and trouble-free
Christmas mail. . f
He offered .these suggestions:
Don't use flimsy, light card
board and paper boxes for your
Christmas mailings. . y.:
Strong Boxes
Pick strong containers in good
condition, of a size appropriate
to the contents. Use cushioning
material of two or more inches
around your gift.
Wrap the package j properly,
preferably in heavy brown paper,
and tie with strong twine.
Don't mark the wrapping with
unnecessary wording such as "Do
Not Delay," .r "Rush.?
-Address plainly and properly,
'us:n postal zone numbers when
ever possible, with return infor

. corner. -'. v
Summerfield noted 'that as a
general rule, firearms, ;. liquors,'
poisons, explosives and animals
are taboo in the mails.! "
- He suggested that valuable
items be registered, j".' -

f90 Miles of Scenic Grandeur9
&y LILLIE MADSEN
(Staff Writer, The SUtesman)
CARMEL, taUf The longest
90 miles in California are those
from! San Simeon to Carmel. We
have; found ho 90 miles in Cali
fornia that offers more grandeur
in scenery. ; :
' This stretch, we were told, has
been treveled in 3i hourst If
you are going to see anything at
all other than the tiny road of
which much of the way you see
but a quarter of a mile at a time
you had best plan on an hour
longer.. We took a "little over
six. jBut then, we saw quite a
bit and had luncheon along the
waythe latter at a small inn
hung far out over a cliff with
nothing but a shear drop be-
i neath us. We wouldn't have miss
ed this trip. We hope to make
it again. - :
Actually, you don't start the
trek 'at San Simeon. You leave
Highway 101 at Morre Bay, 29
miles below the beginning of .the
90-mile trip. Motto Bay is known
as "sunset town". It is the home
of Morro Rock, the landmark
which steps 576 feet right up
out of the Pacific and covers
about 40 acres. From Morro Bay
some of the finest sunset pictures
along the racuic are saia to
be obtainable. However, one of
the requisites Is that you are
there, at sunset .WAJexe -there,
in mid-morning. '
Six miles farther on is Cayucos,
which natives told us, got its
name from Indian canoes noted
by early explorers. How the ex
plorers found the spot I wouldn t
know. Now it is the mecca for
fishermen of halibut But it is 14
miles from here at Cambria
that they go for red abalone and
flowers; .and the famous County
Park whore, as its brochures say:
"the! pines, meet the sea."
J.V J Last Store
" A San Simeon you find a
store. It is well to take a look
at it as it is the last store you'll
find for several miles; There are
places along the next 90 miles you
almost wonder if you'll ever see
.store again. This store is known
as Sebastian's General Store. It
has 'everything but yard goods.
I There are aspirin, gasoline, beer,
r :.f 1: j :t ,
souvenirs, lunch and jade jewelry.
This I is also the entrance 1o the
baronial -estate of the late William
Randolph Hearst built atop La-
Cuesta Encnantada which trans
lated means the enchanted hill.
Plans .are now being made to
open! this to the public. The show
ing will be under the division of
the California Beaches and Park.
It stretches over quite an acre-
age-4-we only saw it from the
telescopes which are also avail
able I at Sebastian's General Store.
It is one of the things you don't
believe, even when you see. No

one here knows how many million
dollars it cost Mr. Hearst to build
the castle.
Slew Rad
From San Simeon, out if you
are one of those whose principal
goal is "making time", turn back.
The road is not for you. Here the
Santa Lucia, mountains walk right
out of the ocean and you follow a
small auto trail half way from the
Top and the shoreless sea. 2,500
feet up, the same down. You view
both and you feel awfully small.
Also you have some of the fin
est views of the Pacific Ocean you
can ever hope to see. We took our
time, and advantages of the turn
outs. There are many little, and
a few not so tiny, mountain streams
coming out of the rocks.
Thirty miles out is Pacific Val
ley School, once housing as many
as 40 youngsters, mostly Mexican.
Near this is Jade Cove, from
where a trail leads to Jade Beach.
Here hundreds of Jade hunters, we
were told.- gather each year. But
it is advisable to check with a
tide book, It would be a lonely
place to wait several hours for
low tide.
Lncla Lodge i
Another 10 miles, and you think
you are dreaming: You come upon
Lucia Lodge. It is a delightful spot
and for a bit you - think you are
over the greater part of the treach
erous road. It tarns out to be but
Jbreatbing stop., The lodge erected

the building by his own hands

the redwood cabins, or you can
stop for dinner, lunch or just a
cup of coffee.
One- spot along the road
about 35 miles from San Simeon
you'll see a sign designating
the "Hunter Liggett Military
Reservation," a proving ground
for military vehicles and ma
neuvers. Inquiry revealed that
there are some 140,000 acres in
this and that William Randolph
Hearst sold it during World War
II to the U.S. Army for 2 million
dollars. That alone shows why
Hearst gained riches while we
remain poor. Had it been ours,
we'd -have gladly given it to the
army. ' .-. i
Small Settlement
' Sixty miles of traveling and
you come upon, the Big Sur, one
of the most interesting spots
along the road.1 It is a little
settlement some 35 to 50 peo
ple. It ; has everything from
grand scenery to a U.S. Post
off ioe. Big Sur Lodge, recom
mended by the -Harold Larsens
(and Duncan Hines) is modern
in every way, in a setting that
no amount of industry can mod
ernize. . From the Big Sur to
Lucia Lodge, .which we passed
some 25 miles back, there are
no telephones. From here to
Carmel, while you again travel
some .narrow roads, and enjoy
some superb scenery, you have
a feeling that you have come
out of a dream and are again in
reality.

Back on Money
For Religion
By JAMES BACON V.
HOLLYWOOD Ufi Many peo
ple talk loftily of the brotherhood
of man. Few do anything about it
Actor Lew Ayres rates among the
few.
In the last two years. Lew has
turned his back on a quarter of a
million dollars in acting Income to
film a documentary series on "the
world's great religions." Besides
the two years' work and 40,000
miles. of travel, the series so. far
has cost Lew $85,000 out of his own
pocket
He will get some but only a
small fraction of his financial in
vestment back when he starts a
nationwide tour with the films this
week. First- stop: San Francisco.
Those in Hollywood who know
Lew best Anow him as a man of
principle. The principle that guided
Lew on his labor of love is summed
up in his own words: .?
"When maa understands, he r.o
longer fears; when he no longer
fears, he loves; when he loves,
there is peace."
Philosophy Stadent
Lew has been a serious student
of philosophy and comparative re
ligion as long as he has been a
movie star. .That goes back 25
years to Lew s famed portrayal
of the bewildered German soldier
in "All Quiet On The " Western
Front.
A Christian but belonging to no
organized sect. Lew visited Japan
for a survey 'of Buddhism and
Shinto: Formosa and Hong Kong
for Confucianism, Taoism and Chi
nese polytheistic practices; Siam
and Burma for Buddhism; India
for Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism
and the Parsees.
Pakistan. Egypt, Jordan and
Turkey were filmed for the religion
of Islam. A month in Israel for
Judaism completed the world-wide
junket.
Job Too Big '
"Those are not all the 'religions
of the world far from it," Lew
says, "but their followers number
most -of the world's population. Li
oian t touch Christianity this tune
because the job was Just too big.
"That's my project for - next
year." .
Lew, who has no press agent,
invited some old friends of the
press to take a look" at the films
the other night. Admittedly, most
came only out of friendship but
all went away amazed.
The films, which will take three
nights to show, are scholarly in
their authenticity of rituals and
music, yet geared to the enter
tainment tastes of a mass public.
The photography, editing and over
all production especially the color
and sound are -real professional
The great bulk of the photogra
phy and editing was done by Lew,
himself. Bob Duncan, a long time
friend, was along to help lug cam
eras and sound equipment and
film scenes in which Lew inter
views leaders of the - various de
nominations. , -i'.j.
Informal Introductions -"
Wneff theTshow goes?on-th-Toad.
Lew will go with it for informal
introductions of each film.
There is no preaching in the
films, other than the message of
tolerance which the pictures them'
seh?es get across. Ncither ,s there
any comparison, showing one faith
superior or inferior to another.
After the tour, he may put the
films on television so that the
largest possible audience may see
them. Asked by a reporter why he
undertook the project other than
the obvious spiritual reasons. Lew
answered: , '
"I've always wanted to do some
thing like, this but this is the first
time I've had the - time. I'm not
so hot any more. Producers aren't
knocking down my doors."
But Lew is a rarity in Hollywood
a modest actor. Abe Lastfogel,
his agent for 25 years, reveals that
movies and television ytn ' still
earn Lew $123,000 a year without
his even trying.
Indian Fighter
HOLLYWOOD (B Up to now
the only strong, silent characters
in movie Westerns have been the
hero and his horse. But a new out
door epic, "The Indian Fighter."
features- a heroine as close-mouthed-
as Gary Cooper and
much prettier.
She is Elsa.Martinelli, the for
mer Italian model who "makes her
screen debut as an Indian maiden.
In the entire film she speaks a
scant 109 words of dialoge.
, "With her face, eyes and figure,"
asks co-star Kirlr Douglas, ''who
needs words?"' '

HOLLYWOOD STARR REPORT:

did not exactly
smell like a rose and was,, as a

say that' the referee knows in ad
vance who is going to win, as do
the wrestlers, because that's the
way the script is written.
Any reasonably intelligent View
er with at least one good eye has,
of course, long since figured this
out for - himself. Even a blind
man, for that matter, listening to
the phony grunts and groans,
could be reasonably sure that what
he couldn't see was hardly worth
it.
Wrestling was a prime favorite
in the earlier days of TV when
there wasn't much else on the air
and the wrestlers themselves made
quite a thing of it with their gaudy
robes, weird hair-dos and syn
thetic feuds. The press has noted
time and again that all this -was
strictly for the birds so far as its
legitimacy was concerned, but the
act continued to pull customers
until TV itself began to grow up
and add more and better pro
grams. 1 .
Wrestling today la dowa to a

The "mellers," however, at least
had pretty girls and handsome he

is a great deal more than can be
