Salem Police Probe
2 Safecracking Jobs
Police were investigating two
W. Salem safecrackings discov
ered and reported Wednesday
morning. One netted an esti
mated S120 but the other was a
dud, police said. - .
A window was broken to gain
entry to the office of the West
Salem Machinery Co., 7th St and
Murlark Ave. The two-foot-square
safe was found on its back
in a room outside the office with
the door pried open.

$70 missing from the safe and
$50 from a cashbox kept in the
safe, police said. The safe dial
Lhad been knocked off before it
was pried open.
' An old three-foot-square safe
at the M. & E. Box & Pallet Co.,
450 Wallace Rd., was broken into
by striking the dial and a larger
safe was attacked in the same
manner but not opened.
No money was found in the
safe that was opened but about
$2 in change was taken from the
cash register, police said.
Entry to the plant was made
through an unlocked door and an
office window was forced to
reach the safes, police said.
Berry Grades Hearing Set
The State Department of Agri
culture will conduct a hearing
Thursday, Nov. .3, to discuss of
ficial commercial grade standards
for strawberry plants, according
to Frank McKennon, plant division
chief. The hearing will be in Sa
lem.
The standards to be adopted as
a result of the hearing will apply
also to strawberry plants of vari
eties similar to the variety now
known as U. S. Oregon" 2172. A
permanent name for U. S. Ore
gon 2172 is now under considera
tion and is expected to be assigned
before the official order is re
leased. All certified strawberry plant
growers are urged to attend the
hearing or submit their views in
writing prior to the hearing, Mc
Kennon said.
North Dakota now has 500 pro
ducing wells.
Arrest Follows

Charge of reckless driving grow
ing out of an accident north of
Salem brought the arrest Wednes
day of James Marshall Newton,
1905 Keizer Rd.
Newton pleaded innocent to the
charge in Marion County District
Court Wednesday afternoon and
was freed on $50 bail.
He was arrested by Marion Coun
ty deputies on complaint of the
Rev. Lawrence B. Cronk, Silver
ton who was driver of the second
car involved in the mishap at Che
mawa road and 99 E Tuesday night.
Assault, Robbery
Case Continued
Assault and robbery charges
against Carl H o g a n Blair, 111
Chemeketa St., were continude for
today for preliminary examination
in Marion County District Court
Wednesday.
Blair, 39, is charged with tatins
$85 to $95 from Andrew Sutton at
knife point at an Oxford St. party
Tuesday night. He was held in lieu
of $2,500 bail.
Sutton was ordered held as a
material witness in the case.

standards for Oregon will become

provision of the State Potato Law.
Principal changes from grades now
in operation are:
1. Addition of recent federal re
visions to the U. S. grades. Five
of the nine grades adopted in Ore
gon follow the federal grade names
and standards.
1. Provision for use of U. S.
commercial grade, not recognized
under the prior state grades. This
grade is included at the request of
a majority of those attending hear--",
which preceded the grade or
der. - F
3. Addition of Oregon percent
grade "lo substitute for Oregon
combination grade.
4. Changes in the Oregon stand
ard and. Oregon utility grades to
bring them in line with - Idaho
standards for similar grades.
The name of the state where
grown is now dropped from the
marking requirements. Otherwise
markings on potato containers
must include the grade, name and
address or brand of the grower or
packer and the net weight.
Any size or kind of container
may be used as container stand
ards were removed earlier this

The grade size specifications are
unchanged.
