Associate, tnu Science Keprter : SAN FRANCISCO Since ; President Eisenhower's coronary attack there has been a rush to doctors- by people with suspicious - ; ll 1 A I A. t r- A .pains in we cnesi, ana me great majority f the pains have been laise alarms, two widely Known I heart specialists said Wednesday. The situation is not unusual because it hannens ever? time a 'famous personage is stricken. Dr. Myron Prinzmetal told reporters 'FREEZE HITS UTAH - SALT LAKE' CITY UV- The 'thermometer ; dropped below ".freezing for the first time this year here Thursday, reaching 26 I degrees. The weather bureau says its the lowest reading . on record for this date. -.; at a symposium of the San Fran cisco Heart ; Association. Dr. Prinzmetal is i Los Angeles heart specialist In 90 per cent or more of these scare eases, the specialist said, the patient can be assured that his heart is not the cause. Dr. Franklin D. Johnson, heart specialist of , the University of Michigan Medical. School,' said doctors should de-emphasize the idea that all pains in the chest are related to Coronary-trouble. It is all right for the patient to go to the doctor if he has a chest pain, but the physician snould be quick to rule out those rwhich on simple examination in dicate no relationship to the heart's coronary arteries, John ston added. I Another thing physicians should do, Dr. Johnston said, is to avoid drastic curtailment of the activity of a patient who is convalescing from a coronary attack.- The pa tient should be allowed all the activity he can stand without dis comfort, and he himself is the best judge of how much that is. Eliminating overweight still is one of the best? things people can do to stave off heart compli cations. Dr. Johnston reported. The ideal condition, he added, is to be about 10 per cent under weight, com pared, to the average for one s height and age. Dr. Johnston said overweight in some cases is a. matter of "stu pidity." r Dr. Prinzmetal told of experi ments showing that fear and even slight changes in physical en vironment can cause a normal heart to give off electrical wave patterns resembling those in cor onary disease. People coming to the doctor with symptoms such as sweating. pounding hearts and dilated pupils, often produce these ab normal electrocardiograph rec ords, he added. Unless the doctor is aware of this, he may diagnose the case as coronary. It means. Dr. Prinz metal added, that physicians should not put too much faith in electrocardiograph records. The Los Angeles specialist re ported he had produced these abnormal wave patterns in the hearts of anaesthetized dogs merely by opening their chests and exposing the normal heart to the outside air. . Even a big drink of ice water can cause the same thing in the normal human heart, he said. ' Happy Is The Day When I Backache Goes Away . . . .
