20 TV Films

HOLLYWOOD (A ' Here i one
producer who can chase me
around a desk anytime.
Jane Wyman, at the moment, is
both the busiest and prettiest pro
ducer in the bus mess. She s in the
midst of making 20 .half-hour TV
films in which she will be hostess
and star and 16 others in which
, she will just , be hostess.
It's a backbreaking routine but
Jane, who loves work, already has
appeared in three pictures. These
include "Lucy Gallant,- - a story
about Texas that even has lhat
state's governor playing a featured
role; "iliracle in The Rain, the
Ben Hecht story and "All That
Feaven Allows," a re-teaming with
Rock Hudson.
- A cynic might think that Jane is
president in name only of her IV
scries but. a day watching her on
tha set proves otherwise. -
When a fet victor asked what
title to address her by, she re
plied: .-,.;".
"I've got myself into so many
jobs on this deal that I now an
swer to Hey, you! " .
The company has an executive
producer; so Jane answers to the
title of madame president. It's an
appropriate title for she will gross
some 44 million dollars over the
next three years on the series.
But most of the money appar
ently is going into the enterprise.
Dily Variety, in a rave review cf
the first show over NBC-TV, re
marked that it showed none of the
penny-pinching and corner-cutting
production of previous TV dramas.-

Jane, whether she realizes it or
not, is sort of a pretty Sam Gold
wyn. As one staff member, a Gold
try n alumnus, commented: -
"She makes the . final decisions
In everything casting, wardrobe,
ses the works. And she always
asks: What's the best way to do
it? never the cheapest." , ....
Jane is happiest when working
herd. On this set-up. she's even
got her pretty daughter. Maureen,
working as her script secretary.
"And she works as hard as her
mother," Jane boasts. This brought
the obvious question to Maureen.
Does she want to follow in her
mother's footsteps?
"I don't know," she "hesitates.
"Five o'clock is awful early to
get up in the morning." .

cast of a motion picture.
In moviemaking, anything that
you hum or whistle can not only
be held against you but it can be
held against the studio to the tune
of. hundreds of dollar. Music in
pictures, even a casual whistle on
a street corner, must be cleared
with the proper publishers or own
ers. '
That explains the long look on
the face of Al Fisher. Columbia's
music research expert. He's cur
rently researching 25 tunes some
of them just a few bars each
that will be used in "The Eddy
XJ-'chin Story."7
Copyright laws give the biggest
h-ndache. Fisher says, and next
times songs that may be owned
r one or more publishers. Easiest
all is the original song made
f cially for the picture.
