I will say, how ever, that the story fell apart at the end and resolved itself into pure soap opera which, of course, is what tjie sponsor is selling. I found it a little disa pointing because Janie told me not two months ago that she defi nitely was not going to do soap operas. The most pleasant surprise, how ever, is a behind-the-scenes one. The producer of this new series, Bill Asher. directed 'I Love Lucy the last three' seasons. It's no particular secret that Lucille Ball herself actually diserts her show, however subtly, and there was some doubt in the minds of a lot of Hollywood people that Asher actually was capable of taking over such an important job as producing a series his own. All such doubts were cleared up up with the first show. He did a superb job and under difficult cir cumstances. The opener actually was about the eighth film shot in the series and the first starring Janie, who had been busy making a picture at Warners when her :Own series got underway. So Asher congressmen are thinking in terms nad to rush her into production in pf'time for the first show on the air fi move, if successful, undoubtedly would have its effect ion Pacific Northwest wheat growers, Rep. Her "Life With Elizabeth" film series is one of the best on I the air, yet nothing ever seems to happen to it. No publicity. No cam paign. Her daytime show for NBC last year was an excellent one but nothing happened. No sponsor. Billboard, a weekly show business trade paper, has just named her the best TV actress of the year in syndicated film. But nothing hap pens. They keep talking about aew show for her. Two new shows. in fact. But nothing happens. What! she needs Is a good press agent, somebody who can do something besides ret her elected as mayor f Hollywood. She has talent to spare, but has long sine been overdue for a good, thoroughgoing, professional build-up. SHORT SHOTS: Frank Sinatra is in a hassle again, but this time it is not his fault. He has star billing for NBC's "Our Town." But Eva Marie Saint is also demanding star billing. So now it's a question of whose name comes first and it's going to look awfully funny in more ways than one if it winds up read ing "Saint-Sinatra" . . .
