Jail Inmate
A city jail prisoner suffered
severe finger and hand lacera
tions Wednesday when he
dentally thrust his hand into

Charles Terry, civil service com
mission director, was directed to
place Mrs, Berg's name ' on the
employment lists, but not that of
the welfare commission.
Welfare commission officials
charged 'that Mrs. Berg left her
employment to .attend the wedding
of a daughter in Minneapolis, Minn,
without obtaining proper clearance.
Mrs. cexg testified she informed a
department " employe of her inten
tion to attend the, wedding but had
not contacted her supervisor.
- The civil service commission de
cision said Mrs. Berg was a com
petent employe and apparently
realized she had erred in neglect
ing to obtain proper leave. The de
cision stressed; howeer, that leav
ing employment without proper
clearance is a serious offense.

ing next week at the Salem Shrine
Club, in honor of Potentate Flavel
Temple of Portland.
Temple and his staff officers of

on Thursday, Sept. ft. 'The affair
in his honor will be held at the
Marion- Hotel. A 'social hour wiU
start , at 6:30, followed by dinner
at 7:30 and informal dancing.

Baldock said the Highway De
partment had received many let
ters from tourists in which they
commented favorably on speed
signs at curves, clear signing at
junctions, mileage indicators at
city limits and new standardiza
tion of stop signs.
A recent survey , by the travel
information division and traffic

many favorable comments regard
ing Oregon's highway signs. . v
