In most cases these lows were set in the first hour of trading. Corn and soybeans lost the most. On the recovery wheat did best, although the only contract to close higher was March oats. Other oats contracts showed wider losses than did wheat futures. Wheat closed lower, corn -lT4 lower, oats T lower to Vi higher, rye Yt-k lower, soybeans 1H-2V4 lower and lard 12 to 20 cents a hundred pounds lower. Wheat started to firm after ex port circles reported Italy had re quested offers on two million bush els of the grain after the close. These sources also said Japan was scheduled to buy 500.000 bushels of American or Canadian feed wheat Wednesday. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was unchanged at $171.30. Industrials were down 20 cents, rails were higher by 60 cents and utilities were down 20 cents. Losers were well ahead of gain ers as 472 declined and 394 ad vanced out of 1,117 individual is sues traded. New highs for the year were reached by 23 stocks and new lows by 19. The day's volume totaled 1,430, 000 shares compared with 1,400, 000 traded on Friday.
