VuHe4 Press SUff CrrespadeBt NEW YORK (UP) Broadway has. seen many an unusual play financing and production plan in the past, but none more exceptional than that embodied in Theater 200. Inc. And the .oddest factor of all is that, whatever its 'ultimate fate, this program doesn't have to pro duce profits today, tomorrow, or even next year. The 154 investors of $300,000 are people who can af ford to wait for results. A number of them are right out of Dun and Bradstreet There are other unusual aspects. The creator and executive of this plan, Edward Specter, had no thea ter experience whatever until late last year although he had been in one branch of the entertainment business Tor 25 years as manager o the Pittsburgh Symphony Orches tra. Also, this is not just another of many play-investing or "angel ing" groups. Powerful Influence "There would be no point as far as I am concerned to getting a sum of money together merely to invest in plays," Specter explained. "Our goal is active production of plays; in short, we hope to be come a powerful influence in the theater." ! The production goal had been reached a year or two sooner than even Specter anticipated. Theater 200, Inc., will be "in association with" the venerable Theater Guild next fall in the presentation - of a new play entitled "Affair of: Hon or" by Bill Homan. "Ultimately." explained Specter, we will produce on our own. We will invest some money of our own we're putting up 50 per cent for the backing of the Guild play, for example but we will take in outside investors just the way oth er producers do. Prepared U Lose 'Actually we were prepared to lose 1100,000, if necessary, in ex perimental investments in the pro ductions of others before getting involved in any sort of production credit, but I liked this Homan play when it came along and the Guild people seem to have some confidence in me, so we're in busi ness. Specter resigned from hij Pitts burgh symphony post in 1952 and gave himself two years in which to raise the funds for his dream project. He met his deadline of i selling 200 units of stock at $2500 by last Sept. 15 and moved, into the Broadway scene. "To get, ex perience, he invested $10,000 last winter in "The Wayward Saint" by Paul Vincent Carroll, with the privilege not usually granted min ority backers of sitting in on all of the proceedings to learn the trade. . ;-. i "It was a failure, but it was $10,000 wen spent." be said4 The production met with more than its share of problems, which enabled me to learn a lot in a short tune." Specter Insured ! As president and treasurer of Theater 200, Inc., Specter has a four-year contract dating from last SepL 15. The retired lawyer, to Statesman, Salem, Ort., Tuesday, July 12, 1955-Se. 2-3 TUESDAY'S BROADCASTS protect the corporation, has his life insured for its benefit in the sum of $100,000 on a renewable term policy. The secretary, and board prominent New York attor ney and a member of the outstand ing producing ' firm. The Play wrights Company. Other board members investors, of course are James A. Linen, publisher of Time magazine; A. W. Schmidt, vice president of T. Mel lon & Sons, Pittsburgh; C. J. Ros enbloom. vice president of the Pittsburgh Symphony Society, and George D, Woods, chairman, of the beard of the First Boston Corp. Specter refused to reveal the identities of some of his other im portant investors several with a number of $2000 shares but in vestigation disclosed that they in clude Paul Mellon, -Pittsburgh fi nancier; Mrs. H. J. Heinz 'II, Pittsburgh; Thomas -P. Johnson, co-owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates; Actors Gene Kelly and Victor Borge; John Ringling North, the circus tycoon, and .William Zeck endorf. New York real estate giant, to name a few. "I will operate," Specter said, "by one basic rule I will not get involved in something in which, right or wrong, I do not believe; I will not produce just for the sake of keeping busy." If hp ran sfirk to that in the face of the many tempting Broad- j way offers. Theater 200, Inc., mi jht wel. become a powerful force in a few years. , Editor's Bote: The SUtrsmaa puk Hxhes in good faith th programs ana tines as provided by radio aad TV stations, bat becaasc oftisaes the programs art changed without aoti (icatioa this aewspaper cannot be responsible for the accuracy herein.)
