Baxter's final vtcvrrvn vm Vtta "Now andf Then" series onl literature. Many I people who tuned in to this man's . swan song must have felt saddened that such erudition and human ity should have to pass from the current scene. If more people had been loyal to this unselfish" and highly en tertaining program, which was never sponsored during its year as a CBS network attraction, he'd still be . in there pitching. But he was a victim of our own apa thy, and we may not see his like again. I had the privilege of meeting Dr.' Baxter shortly after his suc cess with a college credit course on Shakespeare over KNXT had enabled him to become a net work TV attraction. At the time I was struck by the fact that he was hitting home hardest with the people who were least likely to insure his success. Red Skelton and novelist Gene . Fowler were such fans of Baxter's that they got to gether over a bottle of beer every weekend to watch his show. He drew a steady stream pf rave criticism from such Hollywood aame.s as Dore Senary, James. Mason and Ron ald and Benita Colman. Greer G arson enrolled in his .TV credit coarse on Shakespeare and Licjiel Barry more phoned Dr. Baxter at home to chat about "Macbeth" a few nights before he died. Friends of this sort may pri vately reassure a humble college English professor's belief in the value of culture, but apparently their support was not impressive enough to win Dr. Baxter a sponsor or the continued sub sidization of CBS. This is not to say that Baxter's way with a book or a poem had KOAC 550 k.c. 3 KSLM WUl'm'tte Mat WUl'm'tte Mat WUl'm'tte Mat Tello Test KOCO Magic Melon Magic Melod. The church-goers are still praying in California and the heathens are listening to the, Sunday symphony." TELETORIAL: We're giving CBS an "A" in journalism, but flunking them in showmanship for not putting Molotov on "Face the Nation" as scheduled at the windup of the UN's 10th anni versary doings. Ted Koop, mod erator, explained why Molotov wasn't there in the spotlight as soon as the program opened with Carlos P. Eomulo as the featured subject instead. "Mr. Molotov," he said, "would not agree at the last minute to free and im promptu questioning the ground rules of 'Face the Nation'." Ordinarily,, this would be reason enough for switching guests at the -last minute, but considering the personality in volved, not this time. In the first place, anyone in or out of CBS who thought for a min ute that Molotov would ever agree to free and impromptu questioning hasn't been read- ' ing the papers; and in the sec ond place, Molotov s opinions are of far less interest to us than the personality of the man himself. The skill of the interviewers James Reston of the New York Times, Art Syl vester of the Newark News and James Shepley of News week could easily have been employed to point np the pure propaganda aspect of anything Molotov might have been told to say by Moscow, so that none of us Americans would .have been corrupted. Koop's expla nation indicated that "Face the Nation" could have had Molo tov on his own terms.
