Codling Moth
Next to Need
Spray, Dust
By LILLIE L. MADSEN
Farm Editor, The Statesmaa
Now that you have your cherry
trees sprayed or dusted for the
first time for the cherry fruit fly,
the codling moth ends its winter
rest period and starts flights in
apple and pear orchards in the
Willamette Valley. That means an
other spraying again at once to
prevent wormy apples.
S C. Jones, entomologist at Ore
gon State College recommends the
use of either two pounds of 50 per
cent wet table DDT, or three
pounds of lead arsenate to 100 gal
lons of water. Tnorough coverage
is important.
Jones also suggests if spider
mites are a problem that the addi
tion of one pound of 25 per cent
wettable parathion, or one pound
of EPN-300, or two pounds of 25
per cent vettable malathion, may
be added to the DD, or lead spray
be added to the DDT or lead spray
Pear psylla is common to the
Willamette Valley, and growers are
reminded that the Malathion, EPN-
300 c parathion, will ako control
this insect. These materials should
be applied at this stage as a cover
spray.
Scab and mildew fungicides may
be added to this spray by using six
pounds of wettable sulfur, or one
and a half pounds of ferbam, or
one and a half pounds of ziram
per 100 gallons of spray. Sulfur
shoulc not be used, however, on
Anjou or Momice pears. Ferbam
or ziram are all right for these.
All of these materials blend well
together and apply nicely, permit
ting orchardists to take care of a
number of difficulties with one
cover spray.
Reports show that many Marion
and Polk county apple and pear or
chards are heavily ! infected with
mildew this year. Some varieties
are being shocked quite severely
and growers may want to concen
trate on this fungus. Normally,
warmer weather checks apple and
pear mildew, however, the heavy
covering this season still persists.
Karathane, used at one pound
per 100 gallons of spray, of apples
and one-half pound for pears, will
contrc' mildew. This will not help
the scab problem, however. If mil
dew is very heavy, this material
should be used promptly. Karath
ane will not mix with malathion.
but iz compatible with DDT and!
lead arsenate. j i

Radio Relay
Contract Let
For 8 Units
A contract for constructing eight
radio relay buildings for the Port
land-San Francisco Bay area mi
crowave system has been awarded
to Malarkey fc Moore of Portland
by the Pacific Telephone and Tele
graph Company, it was announced
Monday.
The winning figure of . $237,959
was lowest of 10 bids submitted on
the one-story concrete and block
structures, which will be part of a
system costing an estimated $4,-
812,000. Oregon's portion of the mi
crowave project, costing $3,000,000,
is expected to be completed by Au
gust. 1936.
Initially, the new high quality
transmission ' system will provide
microvave channels for three net
work television programs, plus one
standyb, channel for emergency
use. Later, it will be equipped to
carry, in addition to TV, hundreds
of simultaneous telephone conversations.
The underground coaxial cable
now "piping" TV programs into
the Northwest will be used to aug
ment existing long distance tele
phone facilities when the micro
wave system goes into operation.
One channel in the cable will be
kept available, however, for trans
mitting television from north to
south when required.
The eight radio relay buildings
are to be erected on property own
ed or leased by the telephone com
pany near Silverton, Albany, Eu
gene, Cottage Grove, Roseburg,
Wolf Creek, Medford and Siskiyou
