MONMOUTH Final rites for
Mrs. Jessie Ellen Campbell, 76,
late resident of Monmouth, who
died Saturday, will be held Wed
nesday at 2 p.m. at the Evangeli
cal - United Brethren Church at
Monmouth.
Interment will follow at Belcrest
Memorial Park in Salem. Bollman
Funeral Home at Dallas is in
charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Campbell died at a Mon
mouth Nursing Home. She was
born June 18, 1879. at Mt. Forrest,
Ontario, Canada, and was married
to Alvah D. Campbell on March 18,
1908, at Starkweather, N.D.
A member of the Evangelical
United Brethren Church, she was a
resident of Missouri for 16 years
prior to moving to Monmouth in
1936.
Surviving in addition to the hus
band are a son, Asa E. Campbell
of Springfield; three daughters,
Mrs. Margaret C Butler of Dallas
Route 1, Mrs. Maryn E. Nichols of
Princeton, Mo., and Mrs. Beth C.
Mills of Independence; a step
daughter, Mrs. Vera J. Sansingfof
San Mateo, Calif.; 17 grandchil
dren, and nine great-grandchildren.

broke out in a load i of lumber
which Ralph Dunn of Montgomery,
N.Y., was trucking along the New
York State Thruway.
He and a passing motorist were
battling the flames when over the
hill came the radio car of a fire
company bound for a convention.
Back flashed a message and vp
came a passle of firemen, hoses
at the ready. They squirted the
fire out and went on their way.

Pay Homage to
Negro Ex-Slave
NEW YORK m A small group
of Irish-Americans gathered at a
little East Side churchyard to pay
homage at the grave of a Negro
born a slave in Haiti nearly two
centuries ago.
Annually, members of the John
.Boyle O'Reilly Committee for In
ter-racial Justice, a Roman Cath
olic group, pay homage to Pierre
Toussaint, a fellow Catholic who
achieved freedom in old New York,
and became a church trustee.
ST. PAUL A highlight of tbe 20th annual SL Paul Rodeo July 2,
3 and 4 will be the Roman-style riding performance of a pair
f youngsters, Danny Ramberg and his cousin, Karen. They have
appeared in major rodeos throughout the United States and are
credited with being one of the most thrilling riding acts in the
business today.
Crooked Finger Gets
Ready for Pilgrimage

paration for the Marian Pilgrim
mage to be held August 15. About
9:30 a.m. on June 18 the little
community reported for work in
the grove and grounds surround
' ing Holy Rosary chapel and the
pilgrimage path leading from the
church through a half mile of
farm and wood lands to the Clete
Helvey home, starting point of
the procession. .
Father Hildebrand of Mt An
gel, who serves as missionary pas
tor of the Crooked Finger church,
supervised the work. One project
U the planting of over 500 gladio
li bulbs to insure plenty of flow
ers for the pilgrimage.
The procession path will be the
same as last ' year but fences
about the church are being re
located to enlarge the enclosure
and make room for even larger
crowds.
Requests for a repetition of
the pilgrimage have been re
ceived from all over the country.
I Father Hildebrand is ordering
j 8000 candles for the night pro
cession.
Since the Feast of the Assump-
tion, August 15, falls on a Mon
! day this year, and most working
I folk could not attend, it was
I deemed best to hold two pilgrim
ages, one in the afternoon pri
marily for the children and mem
bers of religious communities and
one at night for the general pub
lic.
Six other Willamette Valley
communities are taking an active
part in the preparations this year
by arranging to 'Sponsor large
shrines honoring some phase of
the life of the Mother of God.
They are Jordan, Stayton, Wood
burn, Silverton, ML Angel and
Canby-Molalla.

Remodeling of
Old Interstate
Bridge Asked
PORTLAND I Boatmen pro
tested Monday that the present
bridge over the Columbia River be
tween Vancouver, Wash., and Port
land is a menace to navigation,
and should be remodeled before a
new bridge is added.
Army Engineers conducted a
hearing on the matter. The pro
tests came from tugboat opera
tors, yachtsmen, the Columbia Riv
er Pilots Assn., and dock and port
commission.
The hearing was called to try to
determine whether the bridge
needs to be remodeled to provide
more clearance, both in heicrht
and width, for river traffic. -
If the Army Engineers call for
the remodeling, Oregon and Wash
ington are ready to Dut ud 25 Her
cent of the remodeling cost to
maicn a teaerai government con
tribution of 50 per cent, said R. H.
Baldock, Oregon highway engineer.
The remodeling cost is estimated
at $2,310,000.
A new bridge is scheduled to be
built near the present bridge, each
then carrying one-way traffic. The
ne wbridge is scheduled for com
pletion in 1958.
