Civic CluVs Scholarship To Ruth Cox Statesmaa Newt Service MONMOUTH At the annual Civic Club luncheon at Monmouth Hotel Thursday noon, the follow ing new officers were seated: Mrs. H. H. Hargreaves, president; Mrs. M. L. Sugden, vice presi dent; Mrs. E. N. Stebbins, secre tary; and Mrs. E. K. Gentle, treas urer. Mrs. Homer Dodds, reporting for the scholars-hip committee, aid that Miss Ruth Cox, a sen ior next fall at OCE, will receive the annual scholarship from the Civic Club, Miss Cox' parents live in Colorado. , Mrs.. C C Powell, of the cen tennial committee, suggested that members of the club and other organizations work toward fur ther beautification of the city park, and of homes and gardens as a step toward readiness for the centenniall observance proposed for 1958. The Civic Club voted to concur in this plan. Mrs. Vannie Dewey stated that another hobby sale will be spon sored by the Civic Club this summer. re-election - has not been an nounced. Final filing date - is June 13. Nomination this year is to be by petition. Work on the annual budget is being completed by both school boards with the help of the bud get committees appointed by the respective boards. Serving on the high school bud get committee are Ralph Merr, Joe Vachter, Victor Hadley, Earl J. Adams and Eldred Caster. The high school "board has de cided to ask the voters to ap prove a bond issue for $190,000 for additional building purposes. Millage in the district is not ex pected to exceed that of this year, even with the retirement of both bond issues and interest on both, board members say. The high school will be very short of space next fall, Prin-! cipal Milton : Baum states, and may possibly have to schedule an extra shift of class periods beginning at 8 a.m. until the needed space is provided. A music teacher, Harold Beyer of Reedsport, has been hired for the high school to teach vocal and instrumental music. He will take the place of Justin Dyrud, who has asked for a year's leave to study at the .University -of Oregon. s The District 4-C budget will be about $20,000 in addition to the $362,000 which the district has received from the Union High School district for the sale of the high school building and prop erty. Serving on this budget committee are Leo Lund, James Ekman, R. B. Mallorie, Kenneth Henum and Harlan Moe. In the grade school, Lois Mul cahey.of Salem has been hired to teach first grade and Mrs. Mary Reiling to teach primary grades at Evens Valley, a part of the - Silverton system. Miss Olga Johnson, primary teacher, who has taught in Silverton for 30 years, is retiring. Mrs. Alma Swayze and Mrs. D. Williams have resigned and their places will be filled later. Howard of Portland con ferred the sacrament of confirma tion on 141 school children and a few adults .Thursday night in St Mary's Catholic Church. - Thursday morning the archbishop .had officiated at solemn ordma- tion services in Mt Angel Abbey church. Most of the youngsters confirmed were from the seventh and eighth grades of St. Mary's School and a few were from sur rounding schools. The adults were persons who for some reason or another had not been confirmed while children as is customary. - The children and clergy march in procession from the school to the church.
