ASTORIA (UP) A 42-foot troll
ing vessel owned and operated by
a Portland couple was destroyed
by fire Wednesday as it headed
up the Columbia River five miles
west of. nere. - .
,The vessel was the "Maria B.'
It was beached by skipper George
Karl and his 'wife, Mary Ann, im
mediately after the fire broke out
in the galley."- .
The fire started at about 6:45
a.m. . The converted LCDP had
lust cleared the Kkinannn Channel
and was about 200 yards off the
river bank. ;

boat station, were dispatched to the
scene, but arrived too late to save
the vessel. ;
Mr. and Mrs. Karl were picked
up from the beach by the 40-foot
boat of the captain of the port.
The Maria B was normally
moored at Warrenton. It was
rigged for commercial trolling.

all psychiatrists believe an alco
holic's best bet for curing himself
is to join Alcoholics Anonymous.
The California Medical Associa
tion was so informed Wednesday
by Dr. Max Hayman of Beverly
Hills.. - .
Hayman's address was one of
a score of more talks on medical
subjects scheduled on the last day
of .the . four-day CMA convention:

and election of officers.
Hayman said the- one approach
most favored by psychiatrists" for
alcoholism is membership in Alco
holics Anonymous.. -. ..
"This was the most striking re-'
suit of a recent survey of psy
chiatrists conducted to determine
their opinions on the problems of
alcoholism," Hayman said.
"Ninety-nine per cent of those
polled approve of Alcoholics Anon
ymous and 80 per cent have re
ferred patients to their care," he
said.
