WiVisiting
U.S. Officials
TAIPEI. Formosa ( Chiang
Kai-Shek discussed the "broad
overall situation" in the Formosa
" area with two high visiting U.S.
officials- Sunday, a Chinese source
reported.
A Nationalist Foreign" Office in
formant expressed doubt that the
offer of . Premier -Chou En-Lai of
Red China to negotiate with the
United States on the Formosa cris
is even came up.
Chiang conferred in the after
noon with Walter Robertson, as
sistant U.S. secretary of state, and
Adm. Arthur W. Radford, chair
man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
They exchanged views cn the U.S.-
Nationalist treaty under which the
United States guarantees to de
fend Formosa and the adjacent Pes
cadores from any Red attack.
The meeting was described as
amicable.
This contrasted with gloomy
speculation -among Nationals
that at the least "Chiang would be
. asked to abandon the offshore
islands of Quemoy and the Mat
sus.
Some U.S.. quarters expressed be
lief developments might not be that
severe for the Nationalists, who
have vowed to defend both Que
moy, across the strait, and the
Matsus, 120 miles northwest of For
mosa. ;;-!
The Chinese source said Chiang,
Radford and Robertson talked
i about subjects7 "much broader'
than the offshore islands.
This largely coincided with Rob
ertson s own remarks to newsmen
when be arrived Saturday. He said
he would not comment on a re
port "I came here to talk -over
any evacuation. and declared r
just came to consider the problems
of our treaty."
U. S. Ambassador Karl Rankin
and Nationalist Foreign Minister
' George Yeh were the only others
taking part in the . conference,
which lasted from 4 p.m. until din
ner time. Guests ' said Chiang ap
peared, in a cheerful, amiable
mood at dinner. , . '
After dinner, the five went back
into a session that did not 'break
up until 10 pjn. Chang Chun,
Chiang's secretary general, at
tended this meeting. Talks will re
sume Monday. : -
