Fragrant Flowers are Part of
Patio-Garden Combination
The house and garden meet in a flower-fenced patio,
patio without' flowers around it is ever complete.
Today's patio is any place
where house and garden meet
and mingle. The modern idea is
that gardens shall contribute
charm to the home, and be inti
mately associated with everyday
living. Patios will be enjoyed
most when near the center of so
cial garden activity, rather than
hidden behind walls or hedges. '
Every home can and should
have, a patio. A paved area close
to a door is preferable. Flowers
like sun-baths, so a sunny spot is
advisable. For those who prefer
shade a garden umbrella can be
hoisted. .
A1 patio without flowers around
it will, never seem complete, and
among the flowers should be fra
grant ones. Most fragrant of all
is the nicotiana affinis. This is
the old-fashioned sweet - tobacco
plant, and is far more fragrant
than the improved varieties.
The accompanying illustration
shows. 1 patio planting which can
be made easily even by the inex
perienced, from the seeds of an
nual flowers. All subjects are
easily grown from seed sown di
rectly where they are to grow.
The planting is arranged with
low growing plants in the fore
ground, taller ones behind. The
color scheme is based upon har
mony by Contrast with comple
mentary colors placed together
where each will t enhance the
beauty of its neighbors.
Annual flowers grown from
seeds blossom from early sum
mer until frost, if the faded flow
ers are kept picked off, and rea
sonable care is taken of the
plants. With them can be plant
ed both bulbs and perennials to
give a continuous display of
bloom from the time the 'ground
warms up until the autumn's first
heavy frost. Annuals never out
grow their place,' no matter how
small the area. They are always
in scale, making both house and
grounds seem larger than they
would, were larger and taller
plants set out
Need Sunshine .
Remember that annual flowers
need sunshine. Avoid planting a
garden where the tops and roots
of trees, hedges or shrubbery
shade the flowers, as well as com
pete with them for nourishment
and moisture in the soil.
A situation on the north side
of the house is not likely to be
favorable for the garden illustra
ted,, unless it is placed beyond
the line to which the shadow of
the roof extends in midsummer
at 10 a. m. The location should
be free, of shade from trees and
buildings for at least six hours a
day.

Northwest Provides Wide Selection of Shrubby Alpines
The gardener of the northwest
ern part of the United States,
with a yen for true alpines, could
confine himself to those from his
own region and still have plenty
of choice. f
Best known' of the shrubby al-
fines from the Northwest is the
entstemon. Its truly dwarf spec
cies found on rocky cliffs and
elsewhere in the mountains, make
excellent crevice plants for - a
tunny location. They make a good
ground cover in the shade but
usually fail to bloom as well in
the sun. All of them display great
variation in form and they cross
with each other quite readily but
are characterized by tubular flow
ers all facing the same direction
as though some blustery sergeant
just sternly had commanded

Pentstemon rupicola has toothed

il for its rose-crimson flowers.
Pentstemon menziesi has. smaller
leaves of deep green which may
or may not be toothed. The flow
ers are violet. These two species
of Pentstemon are only an intro
duction to the many others of
equally good rock garden value.
Less well known but adaptable
to more places in the garden is
Dry as Suendermanni. whose trail
ing mats of small oak-like leaves

flowers like tiny pale pink bells
in spring, and bright red berries
in fall. . - .
More good northwestern alpine
shrubs are Creeping Juniper

they also require good drainage.
Other needs will be evident from
study and observation. These
northwestern natives are depend
able and satisfactory. They furn-

the plant's attractions. "

shrubby alpines here in the north
west, although it occurs at low
elevations as well as high ones.

From 15 to 30 pounds of mature
onions can oe grown from one
pound of onion sets, depending on
tne sou and care, and also on the
size of the sets. Plant them two
or three inches deep. The large
sets grow faster, and some of them
will develop seed stalks, which is
not favorable to the , growth of
large bulbs. Buy small, sound

Several of these new .varieties
of high merit are now available.
They bear round pods, exception

picked before the seeds form. They
give a larger yield because they
live longer, being resistant to the
plant diseases which shorten the
lives of older varieties.

The height of their quality Is
reached when they are as big as
a golf ball. Several sowings at in
tervals are advisable to keep new
crops coming to be harvested in
their prime.
If you have trouble growing
beets, it may be your soil needs
lime. Beets are among the first
vegetables to show bad effects
from acid soil. It causes stunted
growth, small roots, and too much
red and yellow coloring in the
leaves.
If your beets showed these symp
toms last summer, be sure to
spread lime or limestone screen
ings over your garden this spring.
Beets also suffer from crowding,
after their roots have begun to
swell. They always require thin
ning out, because each seed is
really a cluster of seeds, and too
many plants will always grow, too
close together, no matter how
thinly the seeds are sown.
Germination does not average as
high as many other seeds, the fed
eral standard being 65 per cent. It
is usually advisable to sow seeds
an inch apart.
Thinning Lettuce
Prevents Plants v
Bolting to Seed
As soon as vegetable seedlings
get large enough to handle usu
ally when they grow their second
pair of leaves make sure that
every plant stands free from ev
ery other an inch apart at least.
If seeds were sown thinly, there
should be no cases of entangled
roots at this stage. Then, as the
plants grow, alternate ones should
be removed until they stand at the
space deemed best for their full
development.
In this process many plants
thinned out can be used for the
table. Lettuce, especially, is usa
ble as soon as the leaves are two
indies across. Some gardeners
never thin lettuce, but let it grow
in crowded rows, pulling as needed
or even cutting off the leaves, so
that more will grow. This never
gives lettuce of the best quality.
and it causes the plants to bolt to
seed earlier than normally.
