YOU CAN SET a pretty table
even if you don't own a complete
set of china. ; -'
' It is wiser to own six or eight
dinner plates that may serve a
larger crowd at a buffet gathering
than four complete place settings
of your favorite china.
" You can combine the plates
with plain china, glass or silver
until you can afford to add addi
tional pieces in your own china
pattern. Some people prefer to
add more dinner plates, using in

Use a glass salad plate. Tiny

Glass salad bowls are popular.
Some young brides utilize the
family punch bowl for salad until
they acquire a wooden one.
SILVER plate or sterling or
pewter are good investments for
vegetable, butter and other serv
ing dishes if you can afford to
splurge. They seem expensive at
first but by the time a few large
china dishes have been broken
and replaced, youH appreciate
the long lasting possibilities of
metal. 1
Ordinary glass oven dishes can
be used as centerpiece containers.
Little vinegar cruets, an odd sugar
bowl or creamer or even hollowed
stem beer glasses may be used in
decorating the table.
Attractive floral centerpieces
and candles can make your table
gleam even if you haven't all the
beautiful china you'd like.
Wallpapering Can Be Simple Job for Novice
' Individual tastes determine the
choice -of pattern and color of
"the wallpapers "selected for home
decor. However, there .are other
factors to be remembered when
electing wall coverings. '
Even in well-lighted rooms,
dark colors appear darker, and
light colors paler, than they ap
peared on the sample selected.
Yellows, yellow-greens and
pinks give an impression- of
warmth and light to sunless or
northern rooms. Cooler tints of
mauve, blue or blue green can
be used advantageously in ton
ing down glares in sunny rooms.
Large patterns of course, cut
down the apparent room size.
Small patterns help achieve a
larger look. Vertical lines, by use
of striped patterns or upright
panel borders, give an impres
sion of increased height; horizon
tal lines help accentuate space.
Thus defects in a room can be
rendered less obvious .by a judi
cious choice of paper.
Wherever possible when se
lecting wallpapers, try to see a
roll of the paper chosen rather
than just a book swatch.
Hanging Wall Paper
Although it is possible to put
new wallpaper directly over the
old one, it is not a sound prac
tice. The water used in the paste
for the new paper may soften the
paste holding the old, and thus
spoil the newer surface. .

To Remove Old Paper -
Apply warm water to the paper
with sponge or wide brush, work
ing in vertical strips one wall at
a time. ., .
Scrape with a putty knife until
paper lifts. More than one appli
cation of .warm water may be
required. If there is more than
one. , layer-, of paper, remove one
at a time.
After the old paper . is off,
sponge again with clean water.
Calcimined surfaces or those
covered with a water-soluble
paint, must be removed before
new wallpaper can be hung.
Preparing Walls
After the old surfaces have
been removed and cleaned, plas
ter repaired, and holes filled

Problem Room?
Use Mirrors for
Decor Tricks '
' Decorative tricks " that can be
achieved with mirrors are nothing
snort of magic. If milady in Salem
has. plans this year to 'dress up'
a room, brighten it,, or create an
illusion of spaciousness, I she can
"do it with mirrors.'
Mirrors fit into any decor and
design . . . traditional or modern
. . . and serve as the focal point
around., which the . decorative
scheme-revolves. ?
Wisely-used, mirrors can en
large and dramatize the appear
ance of any room. A mirrored
waR can literally double the ap
parent size of a too-short or too
narrow room. A fairly small mir
ror, skillfully arranged to reflect
a window can add airness and
light to a dark room.
Behind a prized piece of furni
ture, a mirrored wall area ap
pears to increase the size of the
furniture surface and doubles
the - decorative beauty of the
pieces upon it.
Placed on the ; opposite wall
from a large picture window, a
mirror can draw attention to an
attractive exterior view, while
raising the lighting level in a
room.
Mirror - backed plate glass
shelves provide a perfect setting
for " favorite knick-knacks and
plants, and a mirror-faced fire
place reflects the beauty and
color of furnishings.
Add a mirror to furniture tops
to preserve the furniture finish
and add a third dimensional ef
fect to table floral settings.
Wall mirrors and full-length
door mirrors add beauty spots to
any room; home decorators will
find them as easy to install as
hanging a picture.
Inexpensive mirror brackets
now simplify the installation of
a wall mirror over the fireplace
or above a buffet table.
Attach the bottom bracket
first, then fasten the upper
bracket with its ratchet clip in
the raised position. After setting
the mirror in bottom bracket
clips, raise it to the wall against
the top bracket and the lower the
ratchet clips.
Door mirror installations are
even simpler. Select the correct
mirror size to cover the recessed
panel of the dcor and fasten into
place with bolts or screws.
Just a word of caution . . .
never place mirrors so they re
flect a drab wall, a closed door,
or an uninteresting . view if you
want to enjoy the 'magic of a
mirror in your home.

Women Initiate
79 Per Cent of
Jobs Around House
Don't , let anyone fool you by
sajmg a woman doesn t know
her own mind. A recent nation
wide survey shows that , women
want what they want exactly!
Seventy-nine percent of the do-it-yourself
projects are initiated
by the feminine half of, the house
hold. To be sure they get exact
ly what they want, 41 of them
do their own work.
The strongest motivation is that
women want to enhance the at
tractiveness and liveability of the
family home. They have learned
that simplified installation methods
enable them to do many things
themselves which previously re
quired hiring skilled workmen at
higher costs.
One. of the surprising facts
brought out by the survey was
that the American woman tackles
many tiard physical "man-sized"
jobs such as: land-scaping
grounds, installing J tile floors,
shingling houses, insulating homes,
wallpapering rooms and doing
minor plumbing jobs. Twenty-two
p-rcent of the wommen have been
doing their own home improve
ments! for over S years.
These women realize that home
improvement work is important
to the family's welfare, comfort
and happiness and they are
happy to "do-it-themselves.' -

there's no reason why you can't

you're at aH handy with tools. "
i Therei are ' just three basic
steps:. First ; the panels , which

nailed to the studs and joists, i
Then the second or face ply is j
cross-laminated to the first ply:
with a special adhesive. And
finally, the joints are "welded"
and concealed by a unique
method designed exclusively for

Not only do the walls go up
fast; they are ready almost im

paper, fabric or texture.
This type wallboard is fire
proof and there is negligible ex

changes in temperature.
These predecorated panels cost
little more than ordinary gypsum
board and save both the time and
expense of decorating. " "
