Variety Acts Due
At Home Show
A variety .show with five acts
will be featured at the Salem
Lion's Club Home and Garden
Show April 21-23. The show will
be presented at the State Fair
grounds. ;
The acts will include the Har
mon icaLs, Roxanne Whitesell, sing
er; CTiuck Olson, pantomimist; Ted
ana ianora, an adagio dance team;
and The Daydreamers. a girls trio.

Willamette University will spon
sor French, Spanish and political
science student tours to turope
this summer.
The political science group,
which will be headed by Dr. Ches
ter C. Kaiser, associate professor
of political science, will leave New
York June 24 and return Sept. 13
after touring England, Holland,
Greece, France, Italy, Germany,
Yugoslavia, Spain and Switzer
land. The Spanish study group will
be directed by Dr. Clarence Kraft
and will attend a summer session
at the University of Santander in
Spain. This group will depart July
16, returning two months later. Dr.
Paul Beal wfll be in charge of toe
French tour which will feature
study at the University of Gren
oble. This tour will leave June 18
and reutrn August 8.
QUARANTINE RESCINDED
The Oregon quarantine on vesi
cular exanthema, in effect since
September, 1952, was rescinded
Tuesday, reports J. F. Short, di
rector of the State Department of
Agriculture.

father was committed to the state
hospital Tuesday after ordering
bis lightly-dressed family out of
the house at 1:30 a.m., forcing
them to huddle under a tree dur
ing wind and rain. j
He is Darrell G. Maulding. 25,
who then reportedly called his
brother to say that neighbors were
shooting at him. His brother took
him to Silverton police who called
in the Marion County sheriffs of
fice which took charge.
Those forced outside and found
in a barn four hours later by
neighbors were Maulding's wife,
his two children both under five
years old and an 11-year-old sis
ter. The woman was wearing jeans
and house slippers and the chil
dren also were dressed lightly.
She told sheriffs men of her
husband s action. !

Dies After!
Year's Illries
Charles W. Bottorff, il, a form
er toll test boardman for Pacific
Telephone Jc Telegraph Co., died
Tuesday at a Salem hospital after
about a year's illness. He lived at
4025 Sunny view Ave. 1
Born Dec. 6, 1902, at Hedrk
Iowa, Bottorff worked on news
papers as reporter or telegrapher
at Des Moines, Iowa, Bartlesville,
Okla., and in San Francisco where
he worked with a press service.
He later joined the telephone com
pany and came to Salem in 1936.
He belonged to a Masonic order
in Los Angeles and was a mem
ber of the Baptist church.
He leaves his wife Mildred Bot
torff of Salem and a son, Robert
M. Bottorff, in Iowa. !.

Worker Due
Mrs. Ernest Warrington, wife
of a former Salem Presbyterian
Church worker, died Sunday in
Corvallis, where she resided.
Funeral services will ' take
place today at 11 son. at the
Mayflower Funeral Home there.
Her husband, Dr. Ernest War
rington,7 was for many years on
the religion department staff at
Oregon State College. He retired
several years ago. From Sept
1953 to June 1, 1954, the War-
ringtons resided in Salem where
Dr. Warrington temporarily head
ed the adult Christian education
section of the First Presbyterian
Church staff.
Surviving in addition to the
husband are several children, in
cluding Dr. W. R. Warrington,
a Portland physician.
4 Scarlet Fever
Cases Reported
Four cases of scarlet fever and
five of strep sore throat were re
ported in Marion County from April
2-9, according to the weekly report
of County Health Officer W. J.
Stone.
Other reports 7 included three
cases of dog bite; food infection, 1;
hepatitis, 1; impetigo, 1; influenza,
1; mononucleosis, 2; septic sore
throat, 1; trachoma, 2; tuberculo
sis, S (7 in institutions) ; gonorrhea,
1; syphilis, 1; whooping cough, 1.
Unit Favored
The executive committee of the
Salem Chamber of Commerce
went on record Tuesday favoring
the continuation of the Oregon. De
velopment Council "on an ex
panded basis," i and the transfer
ring of its headquarters from
Portland to Salem.
The action was taken as a pro
test to pending legislation which
would abolish the- commission in
stead of granting it the 20 per
cent increase in its $30,000 an
nual budget as has been requested.
The chamber said moving the
offices to Salem would bring them
nearer the center of population
and in' proximity to other major
state functions.
Also favored by action of the
chamber Tuesday was a senate
bill which would prohibit cities
from levying business taxes such
as Portland has invoked.
Peck Appointed Judge
Pro Tem for Benton
Governor Patterson Tuesday ap
pointed Arthur L. Peck, Corval
lis, as judge pro tem for Benton
County. Peck will serve until the
termination of the incapacity of
County Judge George I. Mobee,
or until the expiration of the
term of office.
Robert F. Vaughn of Baker,
was appointed district attorney
for Baker County, for a term be
ginning April 13, 1955. He will
serve until his successor is elect
ed and qualified. Vaughn succeeds
George. P. Newton who has sub
mitted his resignation.
