Cons idering the general sameness of most half-hour dramatic shows, the promise was taken with a grain of salt in more than one quarter. There's a vast differ ence, it was felt, between wanting to be unusual and actualy accom plishing the feat by gambling with a sponsor's money. Most sponsors, all things considered, hate to gamble with anything but the true. "If a formula is successful," they say, not without logic, "why mess around with it? Give us the formula. Let somebody else do the gambling." , Reagan, however, in concert with production boss Alan Miller, has been singularly successful in getting away with the kind of off beat stories most such shows would turn down instanter. And through a unique "share the ownership" plan, GE Theater has been able to MOMMY come np with a roster of star names that has been little short of remarkable. They include Jack Benny, Henry Fonda, James Stew art, Jane Wyman, Madeline Car roll, Jackie Cooper, George Mont gomery, Fred MacMurray and Cornel Wilde many of them mark ing their TV debuts with the show. Story quality has, for the most part, been equal to the name value. Eva Marie Saint, a com parative newcomer whose name is not yet quite on a par with that of, say, Jane Wyman, was handed a role. Miss Wyman might well have turned down the lead in "Mr. Death and the Redhead Woman." George Montgomery, too, was given a fantasy the story of Gentleman Jim Corbett coming back to earth to fight Joe Louis. As a result, GE Theater has found itself among the first 10 in more than one rating system, a place it has held virtually alone among the dramatic shows. Surely this must be proof enough that the viewing audience has not com mitted itself to an exclusive diet of formula shows. (Copyright 1955. General Features Corp.) KOAC, 550 k.c.
