DETROIT J) The Detroit Red
Wings turned hockey's "Game of
the Year" into an avalanche of
goals Sunday night to trounce the
Montreal Canadiens 6-0, and clinch
their seventh straight National
Hockey League championship.
A corps of 70 policemen more
than twice the usual number was
sprinkled throughout the stands to
prevent a repetition of last Thurs
day's ugly riot in Montreal Forum.
Despite the presence of the men
in blue, the crowd had some fun.
but all of it was harmless. In the
second period a live baby octupus
was tossed onto the ice; someone
else set off a string of firecrack
ers.
It was small solace to the Can
adiens but they left the ice with
one honor. Bernie Geoffrion fin
ished as the league's scoring cham
pion with 75 points, one more than
teammate Maurice (Rocket) Rich
ard, whose suspension last week
touched off one of the most heated
controversies the game has ever
known.

Heavyweights, all burning to get
a shot at Rocky Marciano's title,
dominate the fight program this
week with Bob Baker, the No. 3
challenger, in the top bout.
The 28-year-old Pittsburgh giant
will test Havana's Julio Mederos
in a 10-rounder Friday in Madison
Square Garden. The bout will be
broadcast and telecast by NBC.
Mederos, a 6-2 puncher, is fresh
from his spectacular fifth-round
knockout of Roland la Starza cn
March 2. That was the first time
a heavvweifiht has knocked out

Bethea has fought only eignt
times as a pro. He has won 6,

to fame is a seventh-round knock
out over Harold Carter last De

day night.
Merentino Slugger
Merentino called the little wild
bull of the pampas after Luis An
gel Firpo. "the" wild bull of the
pampas is a free swinger and
willing mixer, but he has trouble
getting away from punches.
Willie Pastrano of New Orleans,
undefeated in his last eight efforts,
will take Joey Giardello's place
in the middleweight 10 against Al
Andrews of St. Paul Wednesday
in Chicago Stadium. The bout will
be telecast by CBS-TV.
Another heavyweight battle is
slated for Tuesday when Bob Sat-
terfield of Chicago and Marty Mar
