Bt REY W. BRUNE
! United Press Staff Cerrespondent
; DETROIT (UP) Automation
threatens to shatter the labor-
, management harmcny which has
prevailed in the automobile indus
try for the past five years.
1 Walter Reulher, president of the
United Auto Wooers, and most
other union leaders see eye-to-eye
with management on the ultimate
significance cf automation. ) They
agree it could raise American
living standards to unheard-of
levels.
i But they don't agree on how
automation the use of automatic
equipment to perform many tasks
now performed by human labor-
should be introduced.
Reuther says the union is not
"afraid" of automation itsell, out
fears the industry may rush into
the automation age without regard
to the individual worker. The UAW
already has served notice .that
long-term contracts are out.
Annual Wage Demand
Under contracts of short dura-
tion, the UAW said in a policy
statement, "the union will be able
to keeD abreast of the various
' developments."
Automation is a key factor
behind the UAW's drive for I
: guaranteed annual wage in con
. tract negotiations this spring. -.v .
Severance pay provisions under
a guarantsed wage agreement
would discourage companies from
laying off large numbers of em
ployes to make way for automa
tion in plants, the union believes.
Instead, automation would be in-
troduced during times of expartd-
ing -markets when displaced wcrk
! ers could find other jobs more
quickly. x
The UAW also feels manufactu
rers would be more inclined to
train old employes to perform
new, more highly skilled jobs in
automated plants rather than hire
new workers. I
May Cnt Work Week i
" -The union says it is fearful the
employers will use automation
only for lowering production costs
and increasing profits, not as a
"tool for the creation of abun
dance." If this happens, the union
would press for a reduction in the
work week perhaps to a 30 hour
week without reduction in pay.
The UAW has told its locals to
resist any effort by management
to Cover: new automated or semi
automated jobs with old classifica
tions and pay rates.
The UAW says it iretermined
to see that automation is put to
work "for the expansion of the
economy, with a minimum of
displacement and hardship for
workers."

Hudson cars for 1955 represent
the most sweeping model change
over in the company's 46-year
history, according to N. K. Van-
Derzee, vice-president in charge

VanDerzee said. ; jr
"The stock-car champion Hor
net, and its lower priced running
mate, the Wasp, are entirely new

Derzee said. "In modern styling
and engineering, these are the
cars which set the standard for
1955." 1 r
For the first time, buyers will
have their choice o three high
performance engines in the Hor
net series, he said. The indus
try's "most advanced V-8" is mak
ing its debuttalorig with the X:
head Championship six which' is
declared to feature instant action
and super induction.
Compact and light weight, the
new V-8 with overhead valves, is
declared to combine exceptionally
high torque output with low fric
tion design. Developing i 208
