tMSte. 2Mfittmin,f Uim, Dinah Shore Taking Refresher Course in Live Audiences By JACK GAVER ' United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK CUP) Two tele vision programs a week would seem to be enough to keep any singer, in professional Jrfin. but Dinah Snore feels that she needs something else, i- j I That's why the blonde star, whose top popularity has lasted more than a decade, has tripped East for three weeks of night club work, meanwhile keeping up her Tuesday and Thursday" TV- shows for NBC. "Once in a while I feel. I just have to come into close contact with audiences," Miss Shore ex plained, "and there is no better way to do this than to work in a supper club as I am here at the Waldorf Astoria. It is some; thing like ' taking a refresher "You can't get the same inti mate contact any other way, not in theaters or in concert appear ances where you're up on a stage and the people are way out there in the auditorium. In those cases you "also have to adhere to a rigid program of songs. Andience A Big Asset "But in a club you can get the fwlint of an audience bv the time you've sung a few bars, and you are able to shift around in the choice of songs to use the ones that seem best for any given oc casion. In a club, an audience can be a big asset in helping a per former do a good show." Miss Shore pointed out that while people may think she doesn't have too rugged a television schedule because her twd shows are only for 15 minutes each, just the op posite' is true. , "There is a tremendous lot of preparation that goes into the TV shows; and we are no sooner done with one than we're working on the other. Besides I have regular recording dates all the time, and I have to prepare two radio shows "Coming to New York for this U. S., Soviet Ships Collide v- CUXHAVEN, Germany W) The 8,228-ton U. S. freighter American Importer sprang a 15-foot leak Tuesday night following a collision with the Soviet vessel 'Janis Rainis in the fog-shrouded Elbe River Estuary. Officials of the United States Lines, owner of the freighter, said none of the 51 crew members aboard of the American Importer was injured. The damaged freighter was rid ing at anchor near the scene "of the accident waiting for the dense fog to lift She will probably re turn to Hamburg for repairs. The Janis Rainis, estimated at 5,000 to 6.000 tons, was grounded briefly but got free on her own. Little America Usefulness Lost To Shifting Ice WASHINGTON ) Dispatches from the Navy icebreaker Atka Tuesday reported that shifting ice has destroyed the usefulness of Little America as a base for future operations in the Antarctic. Little America was the polar home of Rear Adm. Richard Byrd during his famous explorations in the 1930's. It was also used by later expeditions. When the Atka arrived there, the dispatches said, its crew found that sections of the ice cap had collapsed and that geographical features which made Little Amer ica a comparatively sheltered area had disappeared. ' ' - The Atka's dispatches were dat ed Jan. 15 and 17. They said that parts of the camp and equipment left by the Byrd expeditions-and others were still intact but that shifts in the polar icecap had de stroyed much of the ice-locked Bay of Whales. When von rin one TV show right on top of another for months on end, you don t have much cnance to ex periment. You pretty well have to follow the current taste in popular songs. With a neaitny use oi uie popular old-timers. ' ' Experiments With Songs "Even if vou have the time to xTMriment with sonS that are off the beaten, track, it probably wouldn't be good for a TV pro gram that is cut to a certain pat tern. So, when I come here to tne Waldorf I experiment with special material - and unusual Broadway show songs that I like and which never became popular. "Chit fit this, mav come same things that we can use later on television, but the point is that couldn t nave used tne iv snow to find out if they were good for it.'? At in Hnllvwood. Miss Shore's TV shows are being done live from New York. Only the second one here was a kinescope and tnat was because it fell on the night of her Waldorf opening. The one on Feb. 8 will be kinescope also because she'll then be resting up for a few. days at Palm Springs after her local engagement ends. Classified Advertising Statesman-Journal Newspapers 28 ttm.
