"More of Same" Theme for
Family Living in Year Ahead
.By BEA HUMPHRIES
E County Extension Agent
'w" What's -ahead for your family in 1955, will the year be good or
lad? The pocketbook side of family living is important; we work
toward, tne things we want zor our nome ana iamuy. ror oeuer
xmng we must consider the amount of money to spena, wnat to pay,
and how to manaee to our advantage in the year ahead.
'Z The nation's economy is adjusting to peace tune, we xeel this

changes in farm income, however,
money is still plentiful and people
are buying at a steady rate mak
ing more work and more income.
So the theme for the year ahead
might be "More of the Same."
Prices Stable
Consumer prices for the past
three years have been quite stable
and indications are that the trend
will continue. It's true the retail
orices are near an all-time Hen
but for all the many kinds of
goods and services we buy, the
rise in consumer prices has been
only a litle over one per cent
since 1952.
The price of food has been
slightly dropping in the past three
years and will likely continue for
this year ahead. Homemakers
should consider the seasonal
change in prices and buy accordingly.
Price tags on clothing and tex
tiles have shown very small bat
steady reductions: footwear is an
exception. Changes in consumer
demand have made this possible.
However; new spring styles may
cause a alight rise as purchasing
Becomes greater. .
The family buys a great var
iety of services in these times of
prepared foods and ready-made
clothing: but rent transportation.
and medical care take1 most of the
family money budgeted for serv
ices. These have been going tro
steadily in the last three years
and will gradually continue on the
upward trend. ' ? .- y - i r -
Building will continue at a high
evel in 1955. Labor is the bit
item in building and little change
In cost is expected.' New homes
mean more new furnishings and
equipment to be bought The big
demand means prices will stay up
on these items also.
Knowing our income and a lit
tle of what to expect of prices in
this new year, how are we coins
to manage our pocket book plan
ning! -rne new; leaflet "Family
Looks Ahead for 1955," published
by the extension service. Oreson
State college, gives some helpful
suggestions.
Ask yourself does your fam
ily shop around to get the most
for your money, do you review
last year's spending and see
where you can improve? Does
your plan for the year ahead con
sider what your - family most
needs and wants and do you learn
about new furnishings and equip
ment before making a purchase?
Do you consider home production
of foods and "do it yourself
methods to make money go far
ther? The leaflet giving these and
other suggestions of managing
your money is available at your
local county agent's office. A
out of it .
If you add apple and onion to
a curry sauce, and want them to
disintegrate, you will have to
cook, the aauce for a couple of
hours. Choose an apple that does
not keep its shape and cut the
onion fine when you first put the
sauce on to cook.
